If its not like superman, that means i will enjoy the movie. I honestly dont like the idea of superman. To cookie cutter and clean, or atleast, appears to be.

Still checking this out.

Edit:

Having looked at some of these reviews it seems the consensus is "This is a thoughtful, intelligent take on the Superman franchise...then Zod steps in and it's just another action movie."

Complaints seem to be either that its too dramatic for :cape: or that its bogged down by the rote of the avg blockbuster near the end :manny:

the general negative consensus is that "it's too much action".... in an action flick... directed by snyder :mindblown:

Here are some reviews...

The movie slowly moves away from being an engaging film about people and starts to fit itself into the mold of every other dumb action movie you've ever seen.

A fragmented tale with a disconnect between sulking mood pieces and hi-tech urban warfare, whose logic always seems to be beside the point.

An admirable stab at developing a character-driven drama, only to give in to generic action-movie conventions with a blinding, deafening, explosion-laden finale that could have capped off any number of interchangeable Jerry Bruckheimer flicks.

Those reviews are for Batman Begins.

I wouldn't worry too much. This movie is going to be good.

I think it might be one of those movies were the action pay-off just kills off all the momentum the movie built up in terms of character building, etc.

I think the best difference is comparing The Incredible Hulk with The Avengers. While the last hour or so of The Avengers was also pretty much all-out action, it also managed to round off the character stories like Stark learning to be a team player, Banner to accept the Hulk, Black Widow getting over her fears, etc. There was character progression in the battle, which gave some meaning to it. In The Incredible Hulk we see Banner realize he could 'aim' the Hulk, which is the end of his character progression and the fight with the Abomination happens. It's twenty minutes of pure brawling but it really doesn't matter what happens in the fight because the character arc is already complete.

There's a reason why the hero always has some mid-fight realization before finishing the fight. If he had the realization before the fight then he would have nothing to gain from the fight anymore, which makes it just an empty punchfest.

Most critics are complaining that it's not a Superman movie. It's an action movie with Superman plucked into it and you could pretty much interchange Superman for any other Superhero.

I'm guessing that this movie doesn't go into the Superman/Clark Kent/Metropolis/Daily Planet stuff much. So maybe that's what the reviewers are missing?

I never read anymore than the last paragraph or two of a review to avoid spoilers.

isnt that what everybody wants?

im tired of the same old story

Because it's an aggregator and I believe in the accuracy of sample sizes. That's the reason I use it. I hardly ever disagree with the aggregate score. But there have been a few cases.

True. And there's plenty of time for that in the sequels.

They pretty much took Superman off the beaten path...like they did with Batman in Batman Begins.

dope story and lots of action is all i care about in these type films.

Never understood how people could complain about too much action, the lack of action is what people disliked about Superman returns, now all of a sudden too much is a bad thing

RT's system is a little inconsistent though. I've read "rotten" reviews that veered more on the side of positive and "fresh" reviews that seemed more negative.

looking through the bad reviews, a lot of them seem to be pretty on the fence and for whatever reason RT decided to put them in the rotten category.

also, I'm not the type to hate on movie critics, I actually value their opinions way more than the average person. but I don't think this movie really caters to them. remember, critics really liked Superman Returns and they don't seem to be as hyped for an action-packed and serious Superman flick as the fanboys are.

for most of them, the definitive version of Superman is the Christopher Reeve series, so something that deviates from that so dramatically is probably too much for them to really handle. this movie seems like it's more for all the people who were dying for Supes to finally throw a punch in a live-action film

but yeah, for films like this, I actually value the reviews on aintitcoolnews more, because they approach it more from a fanboy perspective than a critic's perspective

Nordling Reviews MAN OF STEEL! - Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.

Zack Snyder has made a superhero film for the ages. More importantly, Snyder and writer David Goyer have brought the character to life in a way that even the Richard Donner film couldn't accomplish: this is the Superman of the comics, big, brash, and powerful, and yet Snyder and Goyer understand that essential truth of the character - he is lonely, but not alone; he is not from Earth, yet intrinsically a part of it; a god among mortals, yet so fragile in his emotions. This is the Superman I've been waiting to see since I was that young boy in my room, wishing so fervently that he was real. Because I think a world with Superman in it is a world worth living in.

Going into a film with no idea about the reviews in this day and age where ticket prices are extremely high is irresponsible in my opinion.

You shouldn't depend COMPLETELY on reviews, but if dozens upon dozens of critiques say a film is trash, I'm probably not going to spend my 13 dollars to see the thing. DVD rip? Sure.

I was going to see After Earth, but after it got trashed so badly I decided to pass. Man of Steel I'm definitely seeing because the reviews aren't so bad and it's a comic book film which I am always more lenient towards.

This "reviews don't mean anything" notion is silly to me. Almost every film that has been trashed by critics did not end up getting a high grade from me. Transformers 2 and 3 and Green Lantern come to mind most recently.
