I never played a Silent Hill game

Play it with headphones on if you ever do. The thing that makes it so scary is the fukking sfx. You'll be walking down a hallway and hear some sound you sometimes can't even describe to people without sounding like you're paranoid lol, but it turns out it's nothing, then you walk into a room and a monster just catches you off guard. Gameplay is mid to a degree but the setting and tension and mood is legendary.

What’s mid about the gameplay?. It plays like early RE games without the tank controls. There’s puzzles. Storytelling. Shooting. Exploring. I’m confused.
