I'll raise my hand and say I was one of guys that criticized the modern product/wrestlers for being lames in real life. I think there's an element of truth to it, but at the same time..... it's missing the point.
partying and drinking vs playing video games is a false dichotomy. One, I don't see how video games are any different than playing dominoes or cards, or whatever the fukk Taker did back in the day. Two, you've either creative or your not. Mick Foley, to my knowledge, never really drank or partied. Even Rock, I dunno how many stories there are of him out to the bars all night.... but no one can deny those guys were creative, interesting guys and their work reflected that. You don't need to be a big unhealthy, dead by 50 style drinker to have good ideas.
I do think the product sucks in comparison today. But it has nothing to do with the guys being soft, or gamers. It has everything to do with the lack of creativity, part of which is caused by Vince's excessive micromanagement.
edit: I will add that the "too pretty" comment he made is spot on. The show is way over produced and clean. Some grit to the actual look and feel of the show would go a long way.
