New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady texted Isaiah Thomas shortly after the All-Star guard was traded from the Boston Celtics to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Thomas reveals in an essay for The Players Tribune.

Brady initiated the conversation with Thomas by texting "What’s up, IT, I heard about the news. You good?"

To which, Thomas responded: "I’m alright. I mean, it’s crazy. It’s a cold game."

Brady replied with, "Yes it is. Best of luck. You’re gonna do great. Keep in touch."

Thomas was surprised that one of New England's biggest sports stars would reach out to him after such a short time in Boston.

Al Horford’s arrival gave the Celtics legitimate credibility. He increased the talent level and provided them with a veteran All-Star presence. They still were not considered serious contenders for the title, but they were in the “one LeBron turned ankle away from making the Finals” category.

His arrival also signaled to the rest of the league that Boston was increasingly becoming an attractive destination for NBA stars. Kevin Durant may have passed on Boston to join the juggernaught out west, but the Celtics were in his top 5.

...

So what does that mean to the 31-year-old Al Horfod and his future with the team? He’s under contract for two more seasons (including this one) with a player option for a 3rd. Nobody knows just how productive he’ll be by the end of that contract, but any shortfall represents the premium the team was willing to pay in order to secure his talents for the first few years.

However, if the Celtics end up having a shot at trading for Anthony Davis, then Horford’s contract is the logical one to include to match salaries going out (presumably with picks and/or young players attached as well). It is hard to come up with another big-name player that would fit the team’s needs and be available on the market, but nobody was expecting to see Kyrie Irving change teams either.

Al Horford is the bridge between eras

The Celtics aren’t just betting on who Irving is as a player right now — a four-time All-Star, an NBA All-Star Game MVP, an NBA champion, and one of the game’s most resourceful scorers. They’re betting on who he can become in Boston. You’re talking about a 25-year-old who is entering the prime of his career and is now untrammeled from the considerable ego and shadow of LeBron James. The glass ceiling for Irving’s growth has been removed. The Celtics believe, as Irving does, that he is capable of more, more than being a championship sidekick, more than Thomas.

He is a very smart, cerebral person. He is very mature, even for 25, he is very mature,” said Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca, following Irving’s introductory news conference Sept. 1. “He really wants to maximize his abilities. He is a hard worker in basketball. He is a hard worker in life. I would say he is kind of a renaissance man. It’s going to be very exciting to have him around here.

When Danny said to get to the next level we’re competing with world-class teams like Cleveland and Golden State, and we have to have a core group that can withstand the charges of those guys . . . this was the best thing to do. This is probably one of the most talented teams that we’ve had on paper. It has got to come together. It’s going to be a work in progress, but on paper to have All-Stars like we have in Kyrie, Al Horford, and Gordon Hayward, that’s a great core.

Christopher L. Gasper: Celtics betting on Kyrie Irving — just as they did with Isaiah Thomas - The Boston Globe

"I'm pretty sure we're going to probably have some rough patches at the beginning," Rozier recently told 98.5 The Sports Hub's Adam Kaufman. "It's common for a team that just got together. But I think we're going to be pretty good. And that's the goal. So I'm not really so much worried about comparing this year to last year. We were a heck of a team last year, but I think we'll be pretty good this year."

Terry Rozier believes new-look Boston Celtics will 'probably have some rough patches' early

Don't doubt for a second they'd lose to the Warriors in a series but the Cs play the Warriors really well, especially in the past 2 seasons. Cs could steal a game or 2 from them.

Odds he ends up signing with us? :patrice:

Himmelsbach reported Tuesday afternoon the Celtics are among the four teams Bogut's camp has communicated with about a possible contract. The big man broke his leg in February, but is nearing physical clearance.

With just 14 guaranteed contracts, the Celtics have room to add one more player. Though they haven't committed to any direction with that slot, Bogut would address their most obvious need, rebounding, and would be the team's only 7-footer.

Draymond Green apparently respects Kyrie's decision to jump ship and join Boston.

"I wouldn't necessarily say it surprised me," Green told reporters Tuesday, as shared in a video by The Athletic's Anthony Slater. "I would say more than anything, just the respect level I have for him. Like, that's tough to do. I don't think people take into account that he put so much pressure on himself by doing that. But the willingness to do that knowing the pressure that comes with that, and saying, 'I'm ready to do it, let's do it,' that's what stood out to me more than anything."

"For him to be willing to step out, man," Green said. "A lot of people would say LeBron's the greatest player in the world. I don't say this in disrespect to LeBron, but speaking of Kyrie, to say, 'I don't want to play with him no more. I want my own thing.' Because you have to deliver with that. And he basically said, 'I'm ready to deliver.' And that's big. That says a lot. And saying that, like I said, once again, he wasn't a free agent so he could have gotten traded anywhere. But he pretty much said I don't care where I go, I'm going to make it happen. That says a lot about who he is as a competitor, his character. That says a lot about him."

Draymond Green: Kyrie Irving's trade demand from Cleveland Cavaliers shows a lot about character, competitiveness
