Excellent post. It's true. Madea is a caricature of grouchy old people who are holier than thou, but still have a lot of dirt in their own closet. There's a reason so many black people find her funny, because pieces of her strongly resonate with experiences with family.



I completely disagree. Madea isn't an outright stereotype of black people. The reason so many people love Madea is because several aspects of her behavior are recognizable in friends and family members. She doesn't sit on her porch eating watermelons talking about how she hates working and loves Massa/white people. If anything, she's anti-white in her defiant and belligerent presentation. She does behave poorly, but saying that alone makes her a c00n is pretty racist in itself. When white comedic figures act poorly, they aren't seen as symbols of all of the ills of the white community. They're just funny characters behaving poorly. Assigning this sort of burden onto Madea just isn't fair.

But if Madea was created by a white person, would she be so loved? I think it would be so offensive. And I guess that's the argument I'm making. Stereotypes in general are exaggerated truths, but even she is exaggerated on-top of the exaggerations. That is why I feel it's minstrel-esque. You don't have to to be full-fledged tappin-dancin-massa character to put on a minstrel show, and Madea has ate watermelon and fried chicken lol. That's only 1 aspect of it. Actually, if Madea was satirical, it would be better, but she's not. There are 100s of black women on TV that encompassed what Madea could have represented and didn't come across as offensive. Helen Martin was the residential grouchy-sassy grandma, especially for comedies and she wasn't an offensive character, not even for Don't Be a Menace. Look at Estelle Getty (Golden Girls/Stop or My Mom Will shoot), a comedic take on that for white folks. Grumpy Old Men...the formula isn't anything new, but they perpetuate the old folk stereotypes, and not the old black uneducated southern stereotypes.


Now as for them producing/creating shows for other races, I have no problem with that. You will never be a greater player in the grand scheme of things without those white dollars somewhere. Now, if you do not desire so, than that's fine but if you do, then go get it. However, you can't forget your roots ever.

true....i admit i havent seen much of grey's anatomy, but from what i did see, her relationship didnt get talked about as much as others....also, the older male lead male doctor cheated on his wife with a white woman....and the other black characters on there are in interracial relationships...

wasnt she deeply in love with her husband she was married to for years? or was she cheating on him with the black dude she is deeply in love with now?...or did the black dude come after she left her husband?....asking cause i have no idea, dont watch the show....with that said: 2 outta her 3 main relationships were with whites, and it seems the 3rd one (the one with the black dude) is an 'after the fact, might as well give yall a try now' type relationship after the others didnt work out....
