as for perry's comments: besides him using 'reverse racism', i understand what he's getting at...but he shouldnt be surprised: he did a complete 180 from his typical shyt, and the people that have supported him wasnt expecting that kinda show....also, if his normal fan base doesnt support it, he shouldnt get upset and try to blame them...which it seems he's trying to lay the seeds for with his comments...naw, fukk that, blame the people you made that show for....

true....i admit i havent seen much of grey's anatomy, but from what i did see, her relationship didnt get talked about as much as others....also, the older male lead male doctor cheated on his wife with a white woman....and the other black characters on there are in interracial relationships...

wasnt she deeply in love with her husband she was married to for years? or was she cheating on him with the black dude she is deeply in love with now?...or did the black dude come after she left her husband?....asking cause i have no idea, dont watch the show....with that said: 2 outta her 3 main relationships were with whites, and it seems the 3rd one (the one with the black dude) is an 'after the fact, might as well give yall a try now' type relationship after the others didnt work out....

TP got to pick from all the straight to dvd actors and paid them the same crumbs the white studios would plus when the non madea movies came out he couldve put on other black writer directors etc instead of "written directed and produced by tp"

I haven't seen much Perry stuff, but I haven't seen anything c00nish. Most of them try at least to have an uplifting message. He appeals to church-going folk he's not making Soul Plane sequels.

I guess the question is why can't Madea exist as some sort of comic relief without being criticized? I get the feeling Madea is an exaggerated parody of how some grouchy old people act and that the character isn't meant to be taken seriously. I also don't think the majority of the characters in those films behave the way she does. I saw one of his movies a long time ago called Why Did I Get Married and there were no characters like Madea in it from what I can remember.

Again I'm not an expert on his movies as I've only seen Diary of a Mad Black Woman and the other one I said but from the outside it seems like people wanna strap Madea as all he does. I look at that character as absurdist humor not as him trying to portray that is the gold media standard for how black people behave. It's like Waldo from Family Matters. Dude was a straight up buffoon that existed for comic relief purposes. Is Waldo called a c00n or the actor that played him? What about Cole from Martin? Some of these characters are just idiots you're supposed to laugh at and aren't intended to be social commentary.

Excellent post. It's true. Madea is a caricature of grouchy old people who are holier than thou, but still have a lot of dirt in their own closet. There's a reason so many black people find her funny, because pieces of her strongly resonate with experiences with family.

But I think Cole from Martin & Waldo exist on the Kelly Bundy plain. Their idiocy isn't based on racial stereotypes. Shawn (white guy on Martin) was the same as Cole. Madea could be satirical, if it wasn't so exaggerated. Like I said, a better comparison would be Big Momma. That's a great take on the all-powerful, all-knowing grandma character.

You should definitely watch a Madea flick to gain insight. She is everything bad in the world. The rest of his films have men as the villains and women that aren't very comfortable in themselves. It's cool to give a character a great arc, but why can't they already be strong?

I completely disagree. Madea isn't an outright stereotype of black people. The reason so many people love Madea is because several aspects of her behavior are recognizable in friends and family members. She doesn't sit on her porch eating watermelons talking about how she hates working and loves Massa/white people. If anything, she's anti-white in her defiant and belligerent presentation. She does behave poorly, but saying that alone makes her a c00n is pretty racist in itself. When white comedic figures act poorly, they aren't seen as symbols of all of the ills of the white community. They're just funny characters behaving poorly. Assigning this sort of burden onto Madea just isn't fair.
