People obviously aren't reading the story in the OP because it literally says that the murderer was the one who initiated the entire confrontation in the first place by trying to kick their door in. Based on what transpired and the headshots at the end it's obvious that he went there with the intention to kill them and used the kicking in the door to initiate the confrontation.

And sadly Black people have suffered generational trauma at the hands of police so it probably didn't even cross their minds to call the cops soon as he kicked the door..they would have arrived hopefully in time to catch him with a gun in NY.
