@MartyMcFly @FlyRy end of peak tv starting?

I'm not sure if this is Peak TV ending, or after the Peak TV trend, networks are just finally settling on who they are and what shows they want.

In the Golden Era each network had an identity. You could hear of a TV show and before you were told what network it was on you could guess with almost 100% accuracy.

Then Peak TV happened and everybody was scrambling, picking up anything and everything in hopes of getting a hit and trying to appeal to anyone and everyone. That's why you had NBC style shows on Fox, CBS tried some single cams when they were known for multi-cam, FOX had a couple animated things that felt one step away from Adult Swim shyt etc.

From the numbers above, it doesn't look like they're picking up and cancelling more, I think what's actually happening is the networks are settling on who they are and dropping the shyt that isn't going to suit their long term goals.

Just my opinion.

That makes sense. As long as we have as many channels and options as we do we’ll always be in peak tv mode. But networks will figure it out. And it’s going to change more once the baby boomers begin to die off (hate to sound crass) and the number of cable subscribers falls of a cliff. They’ll really fine tune what they are and what they show. Everything on a lot of networks now are just clinging to shows and formats that haven’t changed much in 30 years.

I love Murphy Brown and think this is a great era for it in terms of what the show talks about and how it dissects news and politics, but it’s a 30 year old show. Same with magnum and Roseanne and will and Grace.

And networks are beginning to streamline. They’re not spending as much as they used to because the return on investment ain’t what it used to be

To add to above, The Carmichael Show was an unfortunate example of this.

TCS is a Golden Era NBC show picked up in the Peak TV NBC era, when Peak TV NBC is The Good Place, Brooklyn 99, Parks & Rec etc.

The Carmichael Show if it was new right now, is 100% a CBS show, and probably a bigger hit than it was on NBC.

And to further illustrate the example of networks passing on things, NBC passed on Kimmy Schmidt around the time it picked up TCS because they didn't want to be who they should have been as a network (a place with very good but under-watched comedies) and thought Carmichael and Mulaney (clearly CBS style multi-cams) was the lick.

Now they're circling back and saying "fukk it, we are who we are - give us 99 and shyt, maybe lets reboot/restart The Office"

Very good point. Will and grace will be the outlier for them. Another reason they’re begging for a new version of the west wing.

As weird as it sounds, Fox seems to be the only network right now who has a clear understanding of who they are and who they want to be: dramas, procedurals, multi cam comedies, and sports. That’s it. And that’s what they used to be when they first started. The only thing missing is a sketch comedy show

And adult animation. That's a hallmark of Fox.

Pretty much. They got the Simpson’s, bobs burgers, and family guy. That’s really all they need. Everyone else is still flinging stuff at walls to see what sticks. Abc had a clear understanding as well but they’re going through changes at the moment. The bad boys spinoff would be perfect for them as it fits right in what their identity should be and traditionally has been. They’re the family network. Family comedies. Family dramas. Disney all day everyday. But also very female driven. Having a show about two female cops in LA, both minorities? Yeah that’s an abc show

NBC passing on Kimmy Schmidt was one of the stupidest decisions I have ever seen. Not that the show is anything special, it's an enjoyable watch, but it is such a blatantly obvious fit for NBC it makes you really wonder just how blind an entire network can be.

It was a stupid decision, but I understand why they did it when they did.

They were just coming out of the 30 Rock, Parks and Office era, and while people loved those shows, they didn't do well in the ratings, and they were trying not only to get away from that stigma, but from the style as a whole.

In hindsight it was clear they shoulda picked it up and stayed on that path, but if that shyt came out and only averaged 1.5 mill a week how mad could we really be if they tried it and cancelled it after 1 season? Which would have been the most likely outcome.
