I agree with the write-up. I was really excited to see J. Cole come into the game early on, because I thought he had a unique story. People act like rappers' stories are only valid if they went through the street life first, but I thought that Cole was going to be great because of his clear skill level, and because he'd be able to use that skill level to tell a story that normally isn't told in rap, and to open it up to more who have that story.
But like Noz wrote, he doesn't use those experiences as the context for anything else. Everything starts and ends with his own life, and that's it.
I'd really love if Cole just teamed up with a great executive producer to pick beats for him, and let him really just focus on taking his writing to the next level.
