Xbox Series X: next-gen sound via dedicated chip and ray-traced audio

Xbox Series X: next-gen sound via dedicated chip and ray-traced audio
Microsoft's Xbox Series X will use a new dedicated audio chip and ray-traced audio to push next-gen sound

Derek Strickland | Mar 8, 2020 at 6:15 pm CDT (20 mins, 12 secs reading time)

Even the Xbox Series X's audio will be next-gen, complete with a special dedicated audio chip that empowers sound designers like never before.

We've known for a while the Xbox Series X would have 3D audio acceleration via a dedicated chip, but we didn't know the potential of the tech, and more importantly, what it means for developers. The Xbox SX's new hardware-accelerated audio chip means sound designers no longer have to tie up CPU resources for in-game sound effects and music. In tandem with ray traced audio, which uses bi-drectional sound paths to shift sound profiles in real-time, audio experiences will be incredibly immersive and realistic on the next-gen Xbox.

Ninja Theory in particular is enthusiastic about the chip. This is fitting given the Senua franchise's incredible sound effects and score. "It's extremely exciting. We're going to have a dedicated chip to work with audio, which means we finally won't have to fight with programmers and artists for memory and CPU power," senior sound designer Daniele Galante told Video Game Chronicle.

"We take for granted that graphics are powered by their own video cards. But in audio, we haven't had anything like that. Now we have some power dedicated to us," Ninja Theory's audio lead David Garcia also said.

The chip is a big deal for developers on a whole. Sound designers now get their own resources, freeing up the console's Zen 2 CPU to pelt out games at high-end perf targets like 8K resolution, 120 FPS, and ray-traced environments in 1440p, 1080p, and maybe even 4K

Microsoft has so much other stuff to talk about that they aren't even mentioning stuff like this or their ssd technology in full scale.

Pano Panay and the rest of the Xbox hardware team put together the GAWD console.

Nice try but the reason Microsoft isn’t talking about it is because it’s a shyt chip

Cerny already said the audio in our box is already more powerful than the pS4 alone

Hey but like I said 12.1 TFLOPS is great in the same old model

essentially Sony has made a 2 generational leap with its design

If you know ya know

So the audio can take up to 20% of the processing power?

I do get the feeling that these joints are much closer than we all think (which is what's been said for a while). And if so.......

‘Microsoft has dedicated audio breh

So Sony fanboys changing the narrative on gaming and specifically PC gaming...

SSD equals GPU and CPU now

Variable rates is better than fixed rates now

The fanboys is reaching new levels of retardation

People still stressing this? XSX done crushed the buildings and we got quarantined era angst now. Everything about that tweet was false.
Bro regardless if it’s true or not both consoles aren’t that drastically different in power. It is true that a lot of devs are excited about Sony’s hardware. Gameranx was speaking on it as well.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

Series X has separated the processing power that is dedicated to audio effectively insuring that developers doing have to compromise resources to add superior audio.

This tweet is goofy shyt.

Yeah, I just read that as well.

:mjlol: at this shyt.

Granted the 5's audio processor looks to be incredible.

still waiting on the game comparisons.....which we have months for.

Sony bought a dope audio company recently while it is possible that Microsoft's audio solutions are not as robust as Sony's, the following remains.

  1. Dolby Atmos is going to be in the xsx
  2. 90% of gamers will play their console and use television speakers and won't hear the difference either way.
  3. Stanning audio chips is wack as fukk, lol.

Xbox will be a lot more powerful but PS5 will be a lot faster due to SSD

where are you getting that they are close from.
PS5 has variable speeds in its processor and GPU which it never reach top speed 75 percent of the time.
44 percent less of Ray Tracing capability

It will come to first party games Sony first party will take advantage of SSD. The industry will not turn over the gaming industry because of Sony and that SSD.

Where did u get ur info from? Ur speaking on something that u haven’t even seen the hardware for. Every expert that has spoken on this has said the consoles are equivalent to a 2080 and 2080 Super. There will Def be a difference in certain areas but it’s not even as drastic as PS4 Pro vs the One X.

It does. PS5 seems like it's the next gen Super Nintendo; doing so much with it's seemingly inferior power but producing absolute amazing results.

As long as it's easy to develop for, it'll be a beast.
