This is the exact wrongheaded idea I made the Trump post to combat. Mitt Romney's "pro-black Republican"-ness was/would have been completely superficial. Showing up at the BLM protests while advocating for the very policies that continue to keep black people in a position of economic and social disadvantage. The fukking guy was one of the authors of the financial movement that eviscerated the Black middle class and his stated housing policy goal during the housing crash was to not have the federal government interfere at all, which would have accelerated even further the biggest loss of black wealth in this country's history. The guy was a free trade warrior who wanted to replace the welfare system with a workfare system. He was an unrepentant piece of shyt who should be consigned to the trash heap of history like all Republicans.

As people? No. As white men in the mid-70s who have spent their lives profiting off the backs of black inequality, I reckon they're probably equally anti-black.
As political campaigners? I think the 2016 Trump campaign was more interested in making an explicit gambit to bring in the black vote than the Romney 2012 campaign. The Trump 2016 campaign saw an opportunity to drive a wedge in the Democratic coalition by cynically highlighting the deep history of anti-blackness of their opponent, the Clintons, often parroting the arguments of black intellectuals like Michelle Alexander. Mind you, this gambit eventually paid off for the Trump team in 2020 when they won the largest share of the black vote in modern Republican history.
