Yeah, it's definitely in the mold of season 1 but different enough that it feels fresh. Even the opening titles resembled the first season and that shyt had me skeptical.

The Alzheimers/memory recollection angle with Hays is what's going to put this sesson over the top for me.

Absolutely, in it's own way. Honestly it's creepier than the first season....especially the first episode.

Already better than the 2nd season. Mahershala is holding his own (are we shocked though?). Not even close to Rust and Marty, but him and Dorff had some good chemistry on screen. Show is also doing a great job intertwining the three timelines.

I said it before and I'll say it again, Carmen Ejogo is so damn sexy in this. God fukking damn. :noah:

Any cult fukkery and/or pseudo Lovecraft references? :lupe:

hella international
Immediately after watching the first two episodes, there was a part of me that felt SLIGHTLY underwhelmed. I felt like the first episode was the stronger of two, and perhaps I was frustrated because the second episode didn't quite satisfy my curiosity enough.

Nevertheless, I spent a large chunk of work today chronically remembering the episodes, and I do believe the season holds a ton of promise, which will rest squarely on the writers shoulders (duh??). They've done a good job with Hays, and while he might be a bit more strait laced than Rust and Marty, I'm sure he'll turn out to be as naunced and conflicted as the aforementioned characters. Piecing together his life and watching his character development should be an absolute treat. Ali as well as the rest of the cast did an excellent job in their portrayals.

It's certainly alluded to. I will say the atmosphere of the first two episodes didn't touch that of the first season. S1 was truly eerie as fukk right off the bat, while this never quite reached that, but I don't really think it needed to. At least not quite yet. We're going through Hays' recollection of the case, and he kept himself calm and professional through the first two episodes. That being said, there were indications that Hays has trouble facing certain aspects of the case, and I'm sure the story will ramp up in it's eerieness as it progresses.

They definitely did a great job capturing the small town vibe.

I really hope this season can come into it's own, and doesn't lean too heavily on trying to copy season 1.

Not even sure if this is a Lovecraft reference but I saw

a fictional book titled The Forest of Leng in one of the children's rooms. For some reason it just popped out to me.

I rewatched the first season back in September. Did not find it creepy at all compared to the first watch through (the subpar finale didn't help either). What made S1 creepy upon first watch to me were the theories running through in my head. Factoring in that along with the Lovecraftian dread, nihilism, and score of the show and I was borderline depressed after watching it.

There's less facade with the case but the theories are running through my head again.........and boy are they fukked up.

This is what I miss about True Detective.

This season is definitely inspired by S1, but it's far from a direct copy of it. The case will come off as simplistic until they hit you with a big reveal that just changes the whole dynamic of the show. It's doing its own thing and I'm just buckling down for the ride.

:ohhh:

You're sure that's the name of the book? Because....

Leng (plateau) - Wikipedia

Leng is a fictional cold arid plateau in the Cthulhu Mythos, whose location seems to vary entirely from story to story. The Plateau of Tsang, referenced by H. P. Lovecraft and other authors, is probably a region of Leng.

Lovecraft's fictional character Abdul Alhazred describes it as a place where different realities converge, which might explain why its precise location cannot be pinned down.

We might be back brehs. :lupe:
