Yea I noticed after I watched it the 2nd time all of the questions the new detectives asked were about the taxman

I don't think it's him(yet) but it was obvious the new detectives think it might be him

Anybody else think the taxman is the serial killer or a copycat?

It was obvious the new detectives working the case think he has something to do with it
Nah, with how anti-religion he is, and how religion was/is so tightly bound to the government of the city, I'm betting the evidence equally pointed at someone related to the church and someone else but they went with the someone else given the pressures of that society. Of course people in a small town are going to think the sociopathic out of towner is the murderer, but it's clear he's the best detective around and the one who lives only for the shyt.

Also, Woody isn't wearing a wedding ring in the 2012 bit, so he's deffo fukking the chick from White Collar that showed up.

yeah I got that vibe after he talked about the reason he kept that crucifix in house above his bed and his overall morbid persona he seems like a Dexter type sociopath.

I heard an interview with McConoughey where he said he was brought in for the Woody Harrelson role but he went after the Rust Cole part after reading the script and I honestly can't see anyone else in this part after just the first episode.

While I agree that the new detectives think he is their killer I doubt he is. I think they locked up the wrong guy in 1995 (the guilt from which probably led to Cole ending up in the state he is in currently) just to close the case and the real serial killer is responsible for both murders.

If you ever watch first 48, murder police are lazy ass hell, so them making him a suspect is not that significant.

We'll be tuning in to find out if he is the killer, that what makes the flashbacks so important, especially since we know they consider them suspects.

Also, the flashbacks will tell us if they caught the right killer, if its a copycat, or if the killer had a partner.

I said this on another board

"As for Cohle the suspect, I think that's too obvious from jump to be it. I get the red herring vibe on it so I'm going with a different idea altogether and guessing that they suspect foul play/planted evidence to be the issue. There are two hints in the opening toward that end:
A. When Cohle finds the wooden blair witch looking thing at the second location (the pitcher's house), he's completely by himself with no eyes on him.
B. As soon as Cohle sees the crime scene and begins profiling the killer, Woody warns him that a detective who makes assumptions about the perp will start to twist his view of evidence to fit the crime.

Way too early in the season to get a real feel for all the implications of an opening episode...but since I like to jump on twists, that was my instant guess after reflection on the episode. I also don't think a potential killer would be shown the evidence they have so comfortably...they didn't just give him the picture, they handed him the full case file and folder.f"
