Why is that obvious?
He connected with Marty's wife on emotional level, enjoyed their company, drowned out the world through drinking which someone who didn't care about anything wouldn't do, he was shook when he saw that little girl that reminded him of his daughter, he used to have a daughter and a wife which shows that he cared about something, he's a detective whose job is supposed to make things better, he hates the victimization of women and children and feels an obligation to his cases on an emotional level, he had daddy issues. This was all a facade for him to hide from his true feelings and shut himself off from everybody which Marty knew (not saying all of his beliefs were bullshyt). Why do you think he saved the black boy from getting shot up by the people when he could have left him? Because he cares. Rust cares. This should have been obvious the moment we saw his interactions with Marty after they got done getting interrogated by the other detectives. His whole demeanor was changed. The problem is that people had built up Rust to be this near mythical perfect human being when he really was flawed, not content with his flaws but flawed. In my opinion at least.

I agree with everything you say here, dude. For sure Rust cares. He's the type of person some people say cares too much. The existence of the all the bad shyt he sees (most of what you listed) causes him to either try and change it or throw his hands up and leave. At the end he's not doing either of those things. He's accepted it.

This is good but its not the equivalent of Huck ending the civil war, they don't stop the conspiracy, they just got the right criminal after dude had almost 2 decades more killing under his belt. The last 20 minutes (and the ending in general) is about the fact that they did at most "their part" because that's all anyone could do.

Anyhow I still rank this up their with the last season of BB

Yeah, I was exaggerating for impact. It's like being satisfied with himself after saving Jim, putting his feet up and saying "hey well I did my part."

Oh I see what you mean. You're talking about how he's accepted the fact that he they can't get the bigger guys but that he got his.

Yeah I guess I found that him not leaving for Alaska or refusing to quit the hunt for the cult inconsistent with the character.

Like I said earlier in the thread Pizzolatto retains the literary rights to the characters. So there will be novels in the future.

The show is 8 eps long and neither actor is coming back next season. They had to put a cap on the character's journey somehow. Them having Rust say something about going after the cult, or not giving up....or anything like that would've been seen as a cliff-hanger. It would've drove people nuts. The way it's written we get his character arc from A to B. Or hell, from B back to A because the Rust we meet in the show isn't who he's always been.

Can I just say, not reading the thread in case of spoilers as I have not finished it yet ,but this is the best cop series I have watched since the shield. In fact I think you can hardly compare the two but they are both based on policework. It's not just the storyline or the actors ,it's the setting of the drama ,even the soundtrack... everything is perfect.

The UK drama makers could learn big time from this series especially in terms of environment, UK cop shows are always based on gritty dark concrete jungles. it gets boring and bland.
