Hell, now that I think about it, a more likely scenario is Marty pretending to be cool with Rust and helping the cops bring him down. He never liked him, and that was before whatever beef they had. I wouldn't be surprised if he inadvertently helps them frame Rust.

That's what I'm saying though. These two cats are rookies, nothing makes me believe they'd be able to see through Rust's ruse. The guy is head and shoulders above everyone else on the force.

I don't think they are suspicious about the shoot out. If they are there would be no reason to confide in Marty that they think Rust is crooked. We can either chalk that up to some "TV shyt" where forensics didn't further investigate the shooting to move the plot along, or we can assume Rust and Marty were smart enough to alter the crime scene to reflect what you said.

Their age has nothing to do with whether or not they're rookies. Neither of those guys were around during the '95 shyt, and nothing we've seen so far suggests that they're anything special when it comes to police work. So yeah, they're rookies compared to Rust and Marty.

First off, I will point out that Marty acting surprised about Rust drinking is a lie , first time they invited him over to dinner he came drunk. Second tipping off the detectives is just that . He already told about the detectives curse and how everything is just under your nose if you look. The cops think Rust is a burnout line wolf rogue from his ramblings and Marty is acting like this is a surprise to him and I can't believe he is drinking that much and is a possible murder suspect . He watched Rust drink a bottle of Jamison like its water and he knows how he can make himself look a part to go undercover like he did with Ginger. All Marty is doing is giving the cops what they want to hear.

first off. "getting a read on you" is not the same as "playing with you". Rust tells them that after they show him their evidence and explain their suspicions about him.

now why you keep interpreting that sentence as a "tip off" I can't explain. but lemme push my own interpretation that works with the Rust & Marty working together theory.

how about Marty says "maybe he's getting a read on you " on some "hey maybe you guys are right, maybe Rust has something to do with this whole thing, but if so, he was getting a read just so he knows what you have against him"

would you agree that actually supports their theory and keeps em off track?
