The replies to this thread are worse than the OP. The dynamic would change but would still definitely work with a young black cop. Black cops can be "overly eager" rookies and white cops can be street smart and savage too.

Seems like some of ya'll misunderstood the movie. It's not about a rookie cop unaware of how the streets work; it's about him being unaware of widespread CORRUPTION in higher ranks of the police department. A black Hoyt and white Alonzo could be interesting in that context...

I mean it could've worked but it's fine the way it is. Didn't matter if the rookie was any other ethnicity, Alonzo would've banked on him being susceptible to his scheme. Hoyt was naive in believing corruption wasn't still rampant in the LAPD.
