I had actually seen that Davy Back fight episode a few months ago and yeah, there were no mentions of black, just afro...but I'm not sure if its purely a translation issue or if that's something that was changed from the manga. I don't think Oda is a racist/ignorant or anything like that. Fishman Island arc was at some points very similar to Civil Rights era, with the leaders having personalities a bit similar to MLK and Malcolm X, he even had characters dressing like the KKK at one point. The main issue would be (like with other Japanese citizens) the lack of awareness of some racially sensitive subject matter, but that's not surprising since Japan is such a homogenous region.
Oh, I'm not insulted, I'm just tripping how over the top they described our athletic gifts, lol.
Not in the series, but Oda said if One Piece was in real life the characters would be:
- Luffy: Brazil
- Zoro: Japan
- Nami: Sweden
- Usopp: Africa
- Sanji: France
- Chopper: Canada
- Robin: Russia
- Franky: USA
- Brook: Austria
