No one's surprised, just disgusted. Although I was pretty taken aback by the black character in a tree with a bone in his nose. I knew Dragonball was racist but that was beyond what I expected.

I know breh I'm still astonished by the level of racism in that depiction . What the hell have black people done to the Japanese to deserve this sort of ridicule? White anime fans like to point out that darky iconography was imported to Japan and it's an "homogeneous country with little understanding of blacks" () but they have TV's and know what we look like. Why would they choose to dehumanize us for any reason?

They chose to use slavery/Jim Crow era darky iconography well into the 90's when American animation and comics had long eschewed that sort of thing in the mainstream. I wonder why they never depicted themselves with buck teeth, glasses, piss yellow skin and slant eyes since American pop culture is supposedly solely responsible for every idea they ever express regarding race.

It's not an excuse its just what happened.
Its was around that WII era where fascination with cartoons took off like that, the artist were heavily influenced by American cartoons, and thats the type of stuff they saw, and the generations learn from what they say so it could've stuck around.
in the beginning the anime characters didn't have any asian characteristics at all,
look at Astro Boy, that's at the beginning of Anime and its American comic influenced is evident
and right japanese people are racist, when they do depict a character clearly as asian its usually a chinese person with stereotypical characteristics

Frieza was definitely a racist but in some way he was more than that. He basically destroyed the Saiyan homeland, enslaved their race and wiped them out the strongest (ie. King Vegeta) in order to prevent a slave revolt. Everything he did with respects to Saiyans was thorough, deliberate and with an air of supremacy in mind. Remember all of Frieza's relatives have super high power level in comparison to the average space faring race.

Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. I didn't realize it when I was younger but as I got older I realized the non white characters on that show were usually villains. You could tell who was a nikka. Maajin Buu, piccolo, Cell, etc.
