this is from 1986, when Gundam was doing it's africa arc

while they skin tone could have been darker between the soldiers, Gundam is still one of the few anime from the 80s that actually tried to make brehs look realistic and not like some racist ass 1930s minstrel show.

latest

Unlike the racist ass caveman dude from Dragon Ball which aired at the same time as Gundam ZZ in 1986, or Mr Popo from Dragon Ball Z which came out 3 years later in 1989. :martin: what's Toriyama's excuse for the bullshyt he put in Dragon Ball?

This isn’t to give a pass, but you have to remember that Toriyama like a lot of manga artists from his generation and older, grew up in a US occupied Japan. A lot of the inspiration came from the racist cartoons from the West exported to Japan. That’s what they all watched. Many black characters in manga and anime looked Little Black Sambo into the 90s because of that influence. Some did a better job than others. Like your example and Claudia from Macross/Robotech. You could tell who had proper exposure. I would say because they’ve had more positive exposure is why creators born in the 1970s and up draw black folks looking normal. Probably also has something to do with manga and anime becoming money makers outside of Japan as well. Just look at Cyborg 008 from Cyborg 009 from the 1960s up until recently. Someone along the line clearly said they had to chill.

Aren't these North African people depicted in that video?

Not to get into some deep racial debate, but they're not supposed to be much darker nor would they necessarily be considered "brehs". They'd be considered arabs, which is another problematic designation (Berbers aren't necessarily arabs).

It doesn't say which part of Africa this specific battle takes place in, but considering some of the dialogue in the show, The people were suffering under the french colonial rule. Which could possibly place the setting in West Africa.

The previous episode took place in Senegal, which further points to West Africa being the setting.

I want to point out that we do get several darker skinned characters in the show as well, such as Masai who is shown above.

Basically, all this can be traced back to racist ass white people. :manny: I still aint going to give Toriyama a pass on this considering he should have known better by the 80s when he put out Dragon Ball.
