Guilty. At the time, J-Dee's (as we called him at first) beats felt unfinished and skeletal compared to the shyt we heard on "Bizzare Ride" and "Midnight Marauders". Perhaps it had to do with wanting to pay less for samples.. but those early "watery" Dilla beats were a far cry from what we were used to. I love them now.
:gucci:watery?

So 'Runnin' and 'Drop' are watery?
'1nce Again' is watery?
'Stakes is High' is watery?

The fukk are you talking about?

If '1nce Again' was watery, how come it was nominated for a grammy?

Calm down breh. Watery is a layman term for the filter that he used on the beats that made the keyboards and bass sound submerged in water.

Runnin is one of his early beats that don't sound like that and Stakes.

1nce Again is DEFINITELY WATERY.

Drop is DEFINITELY WATERY.

A lot of Beats, Rhymes and Life is WATERY.

This.

I always have to bring it up in convos. Don’t get me wrong. No disrespect to the dead. Donuts and all that was dope. But he used to basically be blamed for ruining Tribe Calked Quest.
J Dilla in general. He’s revered in death but a lot of people hated on his shyt when he worked with Tribe, solo Q-Tip, and Pharcyde.
Not only what you guys said, but Madlib didn't fukk with Dilla at all originally. Dilla rapped on some of his beats without permission, and Madlib was pissed about that shyt. They ended up patching things over and working on JayLib together, but everyone overlooks that their relationship basically got started due to some friction.

EDIT: I'm tired as hell and @chunky_mcdaniels correctly pointed out that it was backwards. Dilla didn't fukk with Madlib to begin with after Madlib had rapped over some of his beats without permission.

Also, I think everyone forgets that Dilla's raps were nothing close to the subject matter of most of the people he's famous for producing for. Dilla's raps were all about strippers, three-ways, weed, heavy chains, big trucks, and even a fair amount of gun play. He had some of the most ignorant street raps ever, but gets put into this soulquarian/conscious box due to his affiliation with Tribe, Common, De La, Badu, etc.

were you around at the time? No ain’t saying Dilla ain’t dope. But a lot of hip hop heads were hating at the time. And he even produced a song for Janet Jackson during that era. But it took time for Dilla to be considered by many to be a dope producer.

Jay-Z, DMX, and Ja Rule were poised to be a supergroup called Murder Inc. There was a big article in XXL about it. They were supposed to drop a really huge album on Def Jam, but for some reason (at least that I never knew) it fell apart.

what are you talking about?

It's exactly the other way round with Madlib over Jay Dee beats? Are you reading this stuff on the internet or something? Someone has confused you there.

I was all the way around then.

EVERY producer who was worth something from a credible perspective was jockin his shyt like a motherfukker. He was your favourite producers producer either vocally or on the low.

If anyone tells you otherwise they don't know whats up

My bad, I see what you saying. Akai s950 was his filters back then, just prior to the MPC 3000 LE that most of his stuff was made on.

Still, Beatminerz shyt sounded 'watery' if we gonna use that term, but it was mainly just loops at that point.

Da Shinin is dope but even as a kid i thought it sounded like someone recorded in the bath.
