Warriors' Travis Schlenk has deal to be Hawks' new GM
4:20 PM ET
- ESPN.com news services
Travis Schlenk has verbally agreed to become the new general manager of the Atlanta Hawks, sources told ESPN's Marc Stein on Wednesday.
A deal is expected to be announced Thursday.
Schlenk currently is in his fifth season as assistant GM of the Golden State Warriors. Prior to that, he was the team's director of player personnel.
The Atlanta vacancy comes after coach Mike Budenholzer was stripped of his dual role as president of basketball operations and Wes Wilcox, the former GM, was assigned to a special adviser to ownership earlier this month.
The Hawks had interest in former NBA player and current ESPN analyst Chauncey Billups and Wizards senior vice president of basketball operations Tommy Sheppard for the GM position.
Atlanta is entering a pivotal offseason, with All-Star forward Paul Millsap poised to become an unrestricted free agent.
Schlenk is the truth. Y'all got a good GM. He'll turn that shyt show around.

Schlenk currently is the assistant general manager of the Golden State Warriors. The 41-year-old Schlenk has spent the past 12 seasons with the Warriors, including the past five as the assistant to general manager Bob Myers. Details of a contract are being finalized.
The Hawks did not confirm the imminent hiring but an announcement could come as soon as Thursday. News of Schlenk hiring was first reported by The Vertical.
Schlenk also spent two seasons as the Warriors’ director of player personnel. Prior to joining the front office he was a video coordinator with the Warriors and Heat and also worked for the Magic. Schlenk also served as director of basketball operations at UGA during the 1998-99 season under coach Ron Jirsa.
Schlenk was part of the Warriors’ front office that signed current Hawks guard Kent Bazemore as an undrafted free agent in 2012. Bazemore said it was Schlenk who told him his contract had been guaranteed in his first season with the Warriors.
“He said ‘Don’t stop working’ and just walked off,” Bazemore said.
I say we offer a reasonable deal like 4 yrs 120 to millsap. If he wants more, let him walk.
Let's get bad for a year or two and draft well in the lottery. No point in fighting for a chance to lose to bron and the cavs.
Happy about this outcome considering all the other candidates they talked to and he obviously stood out among the rest.
Gotta figure out the Millsap situation. Get Baze comfortable, let his numbers rebound, and ship him out asap.
I'd try to sign mirotic and resign ilyasova. Draft a young pf to develop this year. I don't love mirotic but he would help space the floor next to dwight( if we can't move him) and he fits our system. Resign tim hardaway too.I'm actually getting more comfortable with this line of thinking everyday. Resigning Millsap to a $200M deal to be a 5 seed with no shot at winning the East doesn't do any of us any favors, not with a team as bad built as this one. Here's the thing tho: If you don't resign Sap what do you do next? Who do you sign with that money? I believe you have to spend to a certain percentage of your cap space so we would have to use that money (it wouldn't be $200 million since Sap plays/played for the Hawks) but it would be a huge hole that we'd have to spend. Thoughts?
I think the WOAT situation is an interesting one because I would hope that we try to move him but there's a chance that he doesn't go anywhere because we can't find someone who wants his skill set at that price.
I also think we've seen WOAT be comfortable...he's been in this system 3 years now, 2 of them as a starter so I'm not sure how much more comfortable he could be. Schlenk gets bonus points from me if he can find a way to move WOAT this offseason
