Some of you guys really like the basic sh1t that you've seen a million times. This is Miro all over again and we saw how that turned out.
Turning a guy who's getting huge pops and no heat makes no sense, unless it's to work with a face even more over than him. And turning Punk heel against Darby/Page/Bryan/Mox/Jericho (only faces that are arguably as over as him) would lead to 50/50 this is awesome chant matches, the same as him facing those guys as a face character would.
Not everyone can be getting pushed or doing major sh1t at the same time. AEW gets this, but knows the importance of keeping the over/important guys who aren't getting pushed in the main event looking strong and having something to do that the crowd is invested in.
Miro didn't do anything important in his first 6-9 months, but they did keep him doing something and ALWAYS made him look strong. So when it was time for him to get pushed to the forefront for 3-4 months, they did it easily and everybody bought it. I expect the same with Punk when it's time for a main event program with him vs The Pinnacle, or him vs the Elite in a few months.

There's a big difference between Punk coming in and Danielson/Cole coming in. Cole is a regular performer and Danielson has been at least a part-time performer. Before Punk's match against Darby, the last match (excluding the '14 Rumble) he had was 7 1/2 years ago against Billy Gunn. Unless he's been secretly wrestling matches during that time, there's still ring rust to knock off. Probably why his 3 matches thus far have been on a PPV in his home town and two shows that were taped and could make edits if need be. Don't think you'll be seeing Punk wrestle a match on live TV until he feels he's ready for that.
