Chicago’s Oldest Black Bank in Jeopardy
Two black-owned financial institutions left standing, oldest is in need of rescuing

Seaway Bank and Trust Co., on the South side of Chicago, may become the last black-owned financial company left standing in the Windy City. Currently, Seaway Bank ranks third on the BE100s Financial Services Banks list with $551.6 million in assets in 2014.

According to Crain’s Chicago Business, Illinois Service Federal Savings & Loan, a thrift founded by 13 African-American men in 1934 as a depositor-owned lender, is seeking a $7 million lifeline. Crain’s reports that a federal consent order issued April 16 puts the pressure on the $110 million-asset lender to shore up its capital or face “corrective action” from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Without an infusion, Illinois Service risks closure and transfer of its deposits and loans to another bank.

Illinois Service’s financial troubles follows the failure five months ago of Highland Community Bank, a black-owned lender on the South Side. Highland once held the number 13 spot for banks on the BE100s list with $67.2 million in assets. What’s more, regulators closed Covenant Bank, an African American-owned bank on Chicago’s West Side, in 2013. Black banks in Chicago have been a huge source of capital access to black owned businesses in the city.

CEO Norman Williams, told Crain’s, Illinois Service is taking steps to raise the money, including transforming from a depositor-owned thrift to a shareholder-owned bank. That “demutualization” is a necessary first step before new investors can provide an infusion. Assessing Illinois Service’s chances of survival, Williams added in an interview that he’s “as confident as anyone can be, having had the (economic) shock of the last four years.” But said, “I would be naive not to recognize that 1,000 other bankers in my shoes (whose banks ultimately failed) in the last decade have felt the same way.”

In the three years ended last year, Illinois Service suffered nearly $9 million in net losses. The losses wiped out about two-thirds of its capital. Williams attributed the bank’s woes to persistently high unemployment on the South Side and property values that haven’t recovered much from the depths to which they sunk in the recession.

Williams went on to say that he already is talking to potential investors but wouldn’t identify them. As part of its rescue effort, Illinois Service has hired investment banking firm Stifel Nicolaus and law firm Vedder Price, both in Chicago.

Seaway, even with a potentially more profitable business model as a commercial bank, tried for a time to attract new investors and struggled to do so. Like Illinois Service, Seaway reportedly is operating under a consent order, but its leaders have stated it doesn’t have to raise capital to survive.

Here's a post I made about my experience last year in a Black Group Economics thread:

Been traveling and whatnot the past couple weeks so my mind's been all over the place. As an update though, I started an account with One United and not pleased thus far. Mainly because I've opened other online accounts in minutes with no hassle. Fill it out, log in and your debit card is in the mail.

With One United, first I didn't hear anything for a week or so. Then, I got a letter saying that they need a copy of my driver's license and a utility bill. I sent that and didn't hear anything back. Finally decided to call and they had no record of it, so they asked me to fax it. For supposedly the world's first black online bank, they sure are acting outdated and making me do a lot of OFFline shyt.

I just sent the fax today, so I'll keep you brehs posted. I funded the account through my Wells Fargo the day I filled out the application and that went through. My thing is, if they have my money and know that I don't yet have an account, they should be tracking me down to make shyt right, not the other way around. It's been a month now.

I'll keep ya'll posted. Just an FYI.

After some back and forth messages, they refunded my money. I would have much rather had the account open with no problems. But since I'm giving them another chance, I'm going to show up in person with cash so there's no BS. Hopefully they've gotten their stuff together since last year.

The other day I researched black owned Banks and found this list from 2013

Did You Know There Were 21 African American Owned Banks In The Country?

I found one in my area, went down there and opened up an account. I'm about to toss Bank of America to the bushes and make this bank my primary one Carver Federal Savings Bank
They have multiple account tiers so there's one to suit your banking needs. Most of the monthly fees are waived if you follow pretty typical spend patterns. I downloaded the app for iphone and so far I have no complaints besides the fact that you can't deposit checks through their mobile app. Not a big deal for me though and I'm sure that it will eventually change.

The young breh who opened my checking and savings was professional and knowledgable. He filled me in on their company mission and their support of the local community. He also said that they must give out x amount of small business loans, but a lot of the times they go untouched because people don't apply for them.

Just thought I'd share my experience because I never really thought about the importance of banking with your own until the coli.

I recalled my parents talmbowt "black owned" banks having to giveup ownership during the wallstreet collapse, but then maintaining an image of "black ownership" in order to keep getting money and support

Carver Bancorp's shareholders confronted a painful choice on Tuesday. They could vote to cede control of the Harlem-based institution to a consortium of Wall Street firms and the U.S. government in return for $55 million of cash to rescue their ailing bank. Turning the money down would likely have doomed Carver Federal Savings, the nation's largest bank founded and run by African Americans.

Shareholders OK Carver's rescue by Wall St. banks

Again, I applaud effort for your interest and efforts to find a black establishment to support, however,Stop blinding supporting black faces, without knowing their agenda
Cot damnit, haven't we learned our lesson yet?

Yeah man. There's really no good reason not to. They actually give back to the community and hire blacks. If we concentrated our money like other ethnic groups we would wield more political power. Besides, it just feels good to be around your people, knowing your not being judged strictly because of your skin.

Funny enough, there's a black bank in front of my house. I went in there and got judged for my skin. They can kiss my ass :mjlol:

They should try to start credit unions.
