Not that I am complaining, but not sure why anyone cares album sales/streams anymore. It doesn't really have any meaning. Or it doesn't have the same resonance of 20 years ago. Music isn't made to be sold, it's made to be streamed, the structure at a base level has changed. This isn't an album to stream, it's one to play all the way through, which no one is going to do. A lot of people won't like this.
This is obviously Weeknd transitioning, or trying to, into a movie star. Or at least a C list actor. the label doesn't want to FLOP, but just like movies/streaming on Netflix, what does a flop even look like? They will let him spend stupid amounts on album and PR and marketing, because he's a huge touring artist.
it's also a testament to his artistic vision, he could easily put a much more accessible pop album, but he does some dark, laborious look at fame and stardom, with 22 tracks, sound effects, interludes, meta song concepts. I don't think it works 100%, but I found what I liked about it.
