That Pitchfork interview is great. It let's you know that he's fully aware of everything that's been the topic of discussion with him. From the MJ & Prince comparison, to people complaining that they want the 'old sound' back.... Everything is covered - he even called himself a villain which is something that I alluded to in this thread....

This bottom bit tho, I'm going to need the input from ALL of the longtime, XO fam on here (*looks especially at you @Prodigal Syndicate *)

Weeknd in Pitchfork interview said:
Pitchfork: You retweeted a recent Pitchfork piece about how your East African roots are reflected in your music, what did you think of it?

AT: It’s the first time any writer has really dove into that part of me and my music, but it’s always been there. That’s how I was raised. My mother, my grandmother, my uncles would play Ethiopian artists like Aster Aweke and Mulatu Astatke all the time in the house. They would drink coffee, eat popcorn, and listen to the music. It’s such beautiful music, but I didn’t realize how beautiful it was until I left that head space. That’s why I feel like my singing is not conventional. I mean, if you look at technique, I’m not a technical singer; I know I get bashed by R&B heads 24/7. I’m not here to do Luther Vandross runs. I can’t do what Jennifer Hudson does. But the feeling in my music and in my voice is very Ethiopian and very African and much more powerful than anything, technically. There are songs like “Gone” where I don’t even know what I’m saying—I let my voice do all the talking. I’ll probably do an album like that one day where it’s not lyrics at all, just melodies and great production. Maybe the next one, I don’t know. That’s the Ethiopian side of me. I didn’t know what [the musicians] were saying when I was younger: Just because you speak it doesn’t mean you really understand what they’re saying. Ethiopian poetry is a different language. I can speak and understand [Amharic], but I can’t understand their poetry. When my mother would translate—it’s the most beautiful thing ever. I’ve never been back home to Ethiopia, but when I do go I’m going to make it very special.

Brehs..... If the bolded is the next chapter in this shyt, I would officially be able to die a happy man :mjweekndcry:.......

That'd be interesting, but unless he does it as a free mixtape the label would never drop that, especially not after this albums success.

But still,it would be an ambitious and interesting project.

He owes us a mixtape of some sorts anyway :hmm:. I didn't forget years back when he retweeted DJ Drama saying that they were going to do a Gangsta Grillz tape together . I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that he would do a double album reflecting 'both' sides of his music either (his 'new' and 'old' sound).

Creatively, he has an infinite of possibilities where he can take this next.

Shameless really touches the soul man. I relate to that so much being on the opposite end and I love the brutal honesty

Side note: In The Night should be the next single. That hook has hit written over it

After countless listens of this the only songs I'm not really feeling are Earned It and Angel. Angel is boring as fukkkkk
In The Night is obviously gonna be a single

lol @ some of y'all turning on Abel. Y'all sound like those scorned Keyshia Cole fans who got mad she found a man, married one and reflected it in her music

"who's gonna talk about drug use and gangbangs and loneliness now? :damn:" :camby:

Most of the people hating on this album are teenagers who were living vicariously through his old music

How so? He dropped 3 classic-solid mixtape's in one year back in 2011. He don't owe us shyt.
