Guardians of the Galaxy is now the biggest-grossing film of the summer.

Guardians of the Galaxy earned $17.63 million on its fourth weekend, down just 31% from last weekend and now with a $251.88m domestic cume. It topped the weekend and surpassed the $243.8m domestic gross of Transformers: Age of Extinction to become summer’s biggest grosser by yesterday and should pass Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s $257m gross to top all of 2014 sometime next week.

Walt Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy was the top film of the weekend, for the fourth time during its six-week release. The film earned $10.16 million for the weekend (-40%), which brought its domestic total up to $294.57m. That means that Guardians of the Galaxy has now topped the $291m domestic total for last year’s Superman reboot Man of Steel. It also makes Guardians of the Galaxy the biggest domestic grosser for a superhero movie not involving Batman, Spider-Man, or Iron Man. It’s also the first Marvel superhero movie to top the weekend box office on four occasions.

Rank generally doesn’t matter, and the uber-weak slate over the last two weeks has much to do with it, but it’s still a notch 0n its belt. I don’t need to repeat just how impressive the domestic performance for this Marvel title has been, even if the overseas numbers aren’t quite measuring up comparatively. It’s no great tragedy, but with $586.1m worldwide as of today, $700m isn’t a guarantee at this point even with Japan slated for next week and China set for October 10th. But yeah, this is pretty impressive and further proof that Marvel itself is the key marketing hook for a Marvel movie. $300m will happen sometime this week while the only question now is whether it can surpass the $312m gross of Iron Man 2 and/or the $318m gross of Iron Man

1. Guardians of the Galaxy — $2.71 million ($287.1 million domestic total)
2.If I Stay$1.61 million ($35.5 million domestic total)
3. Let’s Be Cops $1.55 million ($62.75 million domestic total)
4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles $1.5 million(169.7 million domestic total)
5. The November Man$1.24 million ($14.9 million domestic total)

Nightcrawler' and 'Ouija' in box office dead heat

Two creepy films fought to the bitter end for domination of the Halloween weekend box office.

Jake Gyllenhaal's Nightcrawler appears to be the slight early victor with $10,909,000 in a killer battle with the horror film Ouija, which ended up with a $10,900,240 projected total, according to box office estimates from Rentrak.

But the final numbers, out Monday, will truly tell the story.

"This is a photo-finish, a dead heat, this rarely happens," says Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for the tracking service. "We'll see how this all shakes out. We're taking about a difference of less than $10,000 here, which is pretty remarkable."
