Box Office: 'Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes' Grosses $73M Weekend
Comment Now
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes debuted with a terrific $73 million. That includes $4.1m in Thursday previews and a $27.7m opening Friday. The 20th Century Fox (a division of 21st Century Fox , Inc.) sequel, which cost $170m to produce, opened well above the $54.8m debut weekend scored by Rise of the Planet of the Apes in August 2011. While some of the bump can be attributed to the sequel going 3D (Rise was straight 2D), this is still a case of a sequel breaking out. Rise of the Planet of the Apes had a strong 2.8x weekend multiplier, while the sequel had a surprisingly robust 2.63x, including a drop of just 5% on Saturday. Heck, if you knock off the Thursday previews, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes made more on Saturday (about $26m) than it did during normal Friday business hours ($23.6m). This is why weekend multipliers matter.

It opened with $31.1 million in 26 markets overseas this weekend for a $104m worldwide debut. Overseas is an open question, but Fox’s unmatched overseas muscle means that I cannot imagine the film not crossing $500m worldwide.

Sex tape is coming out next week and Hercules the week after.

Sex tape looks pretty awful but i hear diaz finally gonna show them meats :mjpls:

i wouldn't be surprised if sex tape is #1 but i wouldn't be surprised if it bombed and was #3 or something

The Purge may make some noise next week too. But yeah Sex Tape may be the one because she said she's not only showing them thangs but showing everything. And with Dawn being so morose, it wouldn't surprise me if next weekend audiences want something a tad more fun

Weekend Box Office: 'Dawn of the Apes' Tops 'Purge' and 'Sex Tape' For Second #1
Boyhood scores $1.19 million from only 33 theaters

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes lands in the #1 spot for the second weekend in a row, bringing in $36 million, raising its domestic cume to $138 million in ten days, but one newcomer did hold its own in the face of the apes...

The Purge: Anarchy proves people don't care if they didn't like the first film in a franchise, you promise more of the same and they'll show up in hordes. The sequel to last year'sThe Purge brought in an estimated $28.3 million, which is less than the $34 million the previous film opened with a year ago, but when you more than triple your production budget in three days I think you've done something right. Of course, the production budget is one thing, the marketing budget on this thing had to be huge.

Next up, another animated family film fails to inspire parents to take their kids to the theater as Disney's Planes: Fire & Rescue fizzled with only $18 million. Granted, this is a Disneytoon film and they aren't putting the same kind of money into this they are something like Frozen -- the budget here was only $50 million -- but 2014 is proving to be an especially tough year to get the family out to the theater. Perhaps people are tired of paying $100 dollars to get themselves and the kids into mediocre 3D movies. I can certainly understand that if it were the case.

Continuing with the weekend's new releases, Sex Tape didn't exactly have people banging down the theater door. Opening with only $15 million, the reteaming of the Bad Teacherstars, Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel, couldn't even muster half of Bad Teacher's opening and a "C+" CinemaScore won't help the films legs. Then again, that hasn't stoppedTammy, which is now up to $71.2 million and it too had a "C+" CinemaScore... oh, and Melissa McCarthy, which seems to be a requirement if you want your terrible comedy to succeed.

Finally, Boyhood added 28 more theaters and is now playing in 33 across the country, and it brought in $1.19 million for a $36,303 per theater average. It will begin expanding more next weekend and we'll see how it can do once it gets into more general audience territory.

Next weekend sees new wide releases in And So It Goes, Hercules and Lucy and limited releases of Woody Allen's new film, Magic in the Moonlight and A Most Wanted Man.

yea im a bit shocked even though i heard it killed on friday

hercules around here had lines around the block im surprised its so low

I'm a big fan of the Rock, but nothing I saw from the trailers had me really hyped for the movie. Plus the fact that it is a story that has been told a bunch already.

Scarlett Johannson is having a good year.

Major role in Capt 3

Got props for that indie movie Under the Skin

Starring role in No1 opening movie beating out the Rock :leon:

That Lucy opening is a lot better than expected...will be really interesting to see Kevin Fiege continue to come up with excuses for why there is no Black Widow solo movie after this.

That opening for Hercules is not surprising. That is $30 million solely from people who like the Rock because no one gives a shyt about the character of Hercules in 2014 and these studios need to accept that fact and let it go.
