Voter ID laws are a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Study after study has shown that in-person voter fraud is exceedingly rare, yet these laws persist, disproportionately impacting Black voters. Under our current system, where there are bad actors actively working to suppress the Black vote, voter ID laws are not neutral, they're harmful. States have even been caught closing DMVs in predominantly Black areas, intentionally making it harder for people to get an ID and, by extension, to vote.
If voter ID requirements were truly about securing elections, then we'd see genuine efforts to ensure every eligible voter has an ID. Until we remove EVERY barrier to obtaining an ID, from cost and transportation challenges to access for people in remote areas, voter ID laws will continue to serve as an exclusionary tool. I would support voter ID laws only *after* comprehensive reforms are enacted to guarantee that every American can easily obtain an ID. In a system of honest actors, with no barriers, voter ID laws could be fair, but in our current reality? No fracking way.
Like, think about it like this: If voter ID laws are genuinely about securing elections, then why isn't there more demand for a national ID that guarantees every legal citizen access? Imagine a system where each citizen automatically receives a secure, government-issued ID at 18, at no cost, which also registers them to vote. This would ensure that no one has to overcome unnecessary barriers, like finding a DMV or paying fees, just to access their constitutional right.
If the true intent behind voter ID laws is integrity rather than exclusion like supporters claim, then shouldn't we support policies that guarantee universal access to ID?
