Psychopathy and sociopathy are both anti-social personality disorders. While both these disorders are the result of an interaction between genetic predispositions and environmental factors, psychopathy leans towards the hereditary whereas sociopathy tends towards the environmental.

Psychopaths are born with temperamental differences such as impulsivity, cortical underarousal, and fearlessness that lead them to risk-seeking behavior and an inability to internalize social norms. On the other hand, sociopaths have relatively normal temperaments; their personality disorder being more an effect of negative sociological factors like parental neglect, delinquent peers, poverty, and extremely low or extremely high intelligence.

Anti-social personality disorder results in extremely violent acts. Though psychiatrists often consider and treat sociopaths and psychopaths as the same, criminologists treat them as different because of the difference in their outward behaviour.

I think people should understand that the author isn't saying that all CEOs/Lawyers/Police Officers/etc are psychopaths, just these are jobs that people who have preexisting psychopathic personality traits are more likely to be attracted to.

Personally I sort of buy it.

Imagine being a CEO that has to ruthlessly lay people off or slash the pay of employees. Somebody with little empathy would have an easier time doing that type of thing (and thus would be more quick to do it) and might end up being better at keeping profits high than a CEO who goes out of his way to look out for employees and is hesitant to lay anybody off. We're not talking about serial killers here, just people with low levels of empathy.

They need to do more research on this stuff. For example, with pedophiles, we know the top 10 professions that contain the most pedophiles because we know their MO- they choose jobs that give them easy access to children. If there are specific behavior patterns of psychopaths or sociopaths, then more rigorous research can be done to determine these things with more accuracy. I feel like this is too close to pop-psychology.

but thats why I was like why the "CEO." They aren't the only c-suite execs that lay ppl off.

If we're going to say CEOs, then why not partners at law firms/consulting companies? I just thought they should be more specific and have better defined positions.
