The Sopranos has more character nuances plus a super strong lead. James Gandolfini as an actor is unfukkwithable. His range is super crazy, and the closest the Wire has is Dominic West. I prefer the Wire, but Sopranos is just a c*nt hair better simply because of a more centralized cast. Both are amazing shows and the fact that you can write essays on every single episode of both shows is amazing. I could spend a year watching both shows and never complain of boredom. I would honestly love a David Chase/David Simon/Ed Burns mini series.
I would say Idris was the best actor on The Wire. But yeah the top 3 or 4 leads on the Sopranos are better than anyone on The Wire acting wise. They definitely had the upper hand in that regard.
I prefer the Wire because the theme is super important to a much wider range of people. The War on Drugs is a failure message is relatable to like almost every American. Sopranos while interesting and the family dynamics are well done/relatable is mostly an esoteric thing to Italians living close to organized crime.

Both are neck to neck for me. I find the Sopranos to be a lot more watchable though. As a black person, the Wire is just too real to watch as often as I watch Sopranos.
Yeah, I did a rewatch of the Wire last year. Yo, Season 4 is just one tragedy after another. Like nothing good happens to anyone. It's a real sobering, not fun watch.

Just finished.

Tony got lucky that AJ never got pinched with Carlo's son for selling X. Also Carlo always looked like he was ready to whenever Tony would cuss him out.

Carmella knew the end was near. At the beginning of the episode, when they were in the safe house and Tony drops by, Carmella seemed super subdued. Her and Tony just seemed happier and calmer amongst the chaos then on regular days. Just my observation though.

Even in season 3.

Pine Barrens might be one of the funniest Sopranos episodes, but it doesn't crack my top 10.
The writing in this show is so layered that my Top 5 changes upon each rewatch, lol. Even the episodes that I thought were initially so-so are appreciated in a new light.

Off the top of my head right now it’s:

1.) Whitecaps
2.) The Ride
3.) Soprano Home Movies
4.) The Knight in White Satin Armor
5.) Funhouse
