The Wire...
for me, it was a show that I had more of a relation to. Don't get me wrong, the Sopranos was a great show, but for all the reasons y'all said, and a LOT because I couldn't relate to no "mafia" types. I'm from northern NJ and went to college in Queens and STILL couldn't get down with that Italian mafia stuff. The characters were rich/well off.
On the Wire, I could see some of my friends in Wallace, Body, Avon and Michael. I could relate to Bubbles story as my family (uncle) had problems with drugs but came back after "winning" that fight. Like, the Wire I could see in front of me, Sopranos had that "entertainment" feel, like I was watching from outside in.
Can't see all the hate for Season 2 of the Wire. The docks told a GREAT story of a man and his family and the fight to keep the family business in tact (the docks). It was the "corner" story just put into the docks. Some powerful episodes in that season, the Greek, Frank, and Nicky. Can't look at it like a season 3, have to take the "hood" element out of it
