Just watched the first two episodes and I'll say this

If you are a big fan of the book series this is based upon be prepared for some initial dissapointment. There are MAJOR changes made to the main characters and the events surrounding them all meeting and the start of the quest. Again, I understand that all the rage in Entertainmemt these days is "Strong, independent women who can kick ass" but the original Novel did an excellent job of portraying the female characters as competent, intelligent, and independent WITHOUT making the main male character a Naive idiot. I am truly beginning to hate that particular method of characterization...

Other changes they made were for the purposes of it being adapted for television, which I can live with. The series is basically a remixing of the second book of the first trilogy, The Elfstones Of Shannara. Which portray main protagonist Wil Ohmsford journeying with an Elven "Chosen" named Amberle in an attempt to restore a mythical tree called the Ellcrys. The Ellcrys is the only barrier holding back the Forbidding, which imprisons evil Demons from spreading terror throughout the Four Lands. They are aided in their quest by a mysterious and powerful Druid named Allanon and a flirty but dangerous Rover named Eretria.

As an adaptation, the look and feel of the Four Lands is very authentic. For an MTV budget they really put their work in when it came to effects. The characters again are boiled down to the tropes of "scared, whiny male who refuses to embrace his destiny" and "strong, stoic female who overcomes her fears and faces her destiny". We ALL know where this is going to end up but the first two episodes showed enough promise to keep me interested. Hopefull they keep the main twists of the novel in place because that would be what differentiates it from Lord Of The Rings and GOT

No Whammies!!
This shyt is lit and the acting isn't corny like teen wolf. :blessed: crixus

The show got A LOT better once Crixus showed up. After the "blindfold race" scene I was almost ready to give up, but by the end I was fully into it.

I didn't expect that it would take place in the future. I thought it would be like "Game of Thrones", but it turned out to be much more like Lord of the Rings/Elder Scrolls mixed with "Thundarr the Barbarian"

Watched this last night.

Both the princess and the rover chick look kinda similar to me :patrice:

I'm digging Crixus as the druid, his costume looks cool and his confrontation with the main demon was :ehh:

The one King's son not believing magic is real :francis:

Those pointy elf ears :mjlol:

So far it was mostly set-up which is understandable, hopefully the story takes some interesting turns with the fantasy genre and we get more of that black elf Commander :takedat:

so which book do i have to start with?

If ok want to know the gist of the tv series you start with Elfstones Of Shannara. This series takes DIRECTLY from that book.

If you want the complete backstory leading up to Elfstones then you start with the very first book, Sword Of Shannara. Sword will tell you the story of Shea Ohmsford and give you the genesis of the Ohmsford Family, the Elfstones, The Sword of Shannara, the Elven King Eventine, and Flick

Keep in mind however that the show has HEAVILY changed the characters And a "bit" of their origins. You'll more than likely enjoy the characterization in the book better as they haven't been adapted to fit the "Teen and Sexy" crowd that MTV is going after.

If they go by the novel then there will most DEFINITELY be some cool twists to the story. I don't want to spoil the ending but just know there was a cool bit of foreshadowing right in the first episode (a direct conversation between Wil and Allanon that you might think is a throwaway)

I felt the introduction of the elf boy they found chained up was really executed poorly, just the way they found him and the fact he has magic visions now.

Some of the acting between the Rover chick and her father, and the princess :ld:. Will has fared a bit better, but Crixus still outshines everybody whenever he is on screen easily. They did make it back to the magic tree sooner than I expected.

Will being biracial in this universe :skip:. "Not good enough for the elves, not good enough for the humans" :mjpls:
