I think this has more to do with culture. When you have a sense of culture you have sense of communion and solidarity. We've always struggled to initiate a sense of brotherhood amongst ourselves when these things seem to be second hand nature for others. Most groups don't have to create movements and nationalist groups to promote cohesion.
All of this seems to indicate a complete lack of culture. This is why I say a complete shift in thought is needed.

I agree, there is a lack of pride.

Good point. At one point we did have a culture that was centered around cooperation and trust. But that was a long time ago and one of the biggest elements tying that together was racism because of the laws of the day. But even then, our own culture among us was in conflict with the greater culture of the country that emphasized individualism and competition amongst each other. Little did people realize that you need institutions put in place that will allow you the freedom to pursue individual interests.

Immigrant groups coming into this country (except African Americans) already have that sense of community because it is the norm where they come from and they recognize the need to aggregate power and wealth when you are the minority. African Americans on the other hand think we can do these things on our own.

This is too true. And what is also telling is that many of our youth aren't even on reading level to attend community college, let alone a four year school. I am apart of this organization that fosters youth to be committed to service in their communities. In the program we put them through leadership, finance, and academic workshops and at first I was shocked at how poor their reading levels were. It was important for them to comprehend the concepts of the program early on because they were going to be given actual budgets with real money to create a service project. But many of them needed extra attention and help to be able to read at a 9th grade level.

So we enrolled them in tutoring classes to improve their speech and reading skills and throughout the course of the academic year, ALL of them began to improve. It's not impossible to help our youth break out of the darkness if we are able to be the light that guides their way.
:dwillhuh: I though the literacy and graduation rates amongst AA's were improving.

That said, the modern day black intellectual is out of touch with black culture, leaving him without much influence on our community.
:yeshrug:
:snoop: I failed yall, been sleeping with every shade under the sun :sadbron:

No regrets though :gladbron:

We teach latino students as well and we have latino teachers and interpreters with us when we go through our sessions. One of the things I noticed early on was the growing fascination the students had for learning when it came to knowing about Africa and other subjects outside of the European paradigm. It so much in fact that some of them asked to be taken on field trips and read books on various subjects. I could see the pride in their eyes in the fact that they were learning about people who looked liked them and held positions of power and did great things outside of being slaves. Recently we were having discussions on whether to include the parents in any of our workshops as well.
Not going to lie certain core aspects of modern education which is currently taught in schools are uncontrollably boring, no matter how it's spoon feed. I don't blame kids for being engaged and taking a liken to external examples.

Exactly, and who are the heads of the boarding meetings? Who head the school districts? Do you think they will allow you to focus on your own and no one else?

Bravo gentleman. I think its appropriate to highlight these post because this is the image of the Black Intellectual that needs to be at the forefront of the conversation.

Unfortunately the "Black Intellectual" has been a title reserved for what we perceive as monolithic figures.

We need, desperately, for the individuals ages 18 - 30 to bring their skills and knowledge back to the community. We don't need this 1 national figure to rally around.
Yeah I'm going start really looking for some outreach places that I can help volunteer. I think I'm the prime candidate, these young cats need to see on the frontlines. I definitely help open up some closed minds with my life experiences, especially since I shouldn't be too much older than them.

Side Note: Here's couple looks inside urban schools, and what modern administrations are doing to combat this disparity:

and the white supremacist power structure understands this all too well which is why Black children are being miseducated in the public school system, many of them graduating high school not even able to read at their grade level.

it's so fukked up that we can't put on a Malcolm x tape and let it play for the kids of this generation, they can't keep up with the English language enough to even grasp the message. it's frustrating as hell to these kids that someone is speaking their native language (English) and they can't even understand it unless it's being spoken in a broken and reduced manner.

we can't keep sending our children to public schools and expecting them to function at the level we need them to.
you know we're done for when in 2013-4 you have now ppl in a hiphop forum saying sh1t like this

This is why I believe integration did more harm than good. Yes, there is no doubt that we have better opportunities than we had in the past. But at what cost? For a few to prosper while the masses suffer?
There have been various groups of people who've united through their oppression and struggles. Jews, Sikhs, etc. Our hardships should have forged together a strong sense of solidarity and unity. Embracing the ideals of individualism and having skewed knowledge of our history has fostered this sense of "every man for him/herself".

I agree, there is a lack of pride.

I don't think this lack of pride is inherent. I think it's in part due to a lack of culture.

you disagree?

take a trip to your local public schools in the hood like I have. I've experienced this first hand so don't confuse it with defeatist attitude. I actually want to see my people win, but in order to do that we MUST be honest in acknowledging the current condition we're in.

In America they have no role. Giving black people self esteem boosters and making cacs rich but once the cacs acknowledge their gifts, you'll have to pay them for those boosters. Respect to the teachers though.

what will it take for them to recognize our problems as a priority?

a lot of us as a people thought we would be prioritized with pres. Obama being in office, but we see how that's going so far.
well.. barack top donor was jp morgan. right after election he trolled us and bailed the banks and wall street out.
that's where his priorities are. his priorities are on who pays him. the priorities are on how buys the system.
as a people we just don't have it like that to buy the system. and can't compete with ppl who get their money from corporations that can create money out of thin air.

:wow:

exactly, so where does that leave us?

out in the cold, permanently unless we bow down and assimilate into the system.

this is why even some of our strongest brothers can be bought off, they can literally make offers that we're really not in a position to refuse.

Farrakhan is a joke because he is a capitalist first and condescends black people...his speeches are filled with insults and derogatory words towards black men...his numerology and bullshyt is as thin as a piece of fukking toilet paper in a thunderstorm...
