first time i realized rock was an opportunist was win his rocky mavia gimmick failed. wwf re-invented him as a black militant, which was a huge success. im pretty sure that's when he realized it pays to "play" black.

His looks arn't the issue (at least not to me).

Luke Cage is supposed to be a hip street savvy cat from Harlem... I don't see the Rock pulling off the tone, mood or attitude of the character. Same can be said of someone like Terry Crews...

Omar Epps or Wesley Snipes (10-15 years ago) would be perfect not because they necessarily "look" the part but because they are "natural" New Yorker's and they have the personality to play the character. In the same way Michael Keaton didn't have the "Bruce Wayne" look but he nailed the character (and to me his performance hasn't been topped in that role).

The look of Bruce Wayne isn't nearly as important as the Look of Luke Cage.

How Luke looks physically is actually a big part of his character. He's a large muscular man. There's no amount of bulking up that Snipes or Epps could do to pull that look off.

Terry Crews looks the part but he can't carry a movie and people pretty much look at him as a goofball.

After watching Rock in Fast 5 and hearing stories about him during his days at Miami U I think he can pull off Cage.

he's not and i don't expect him to, he was raised culturally as a samoan. there isn't exactly a "black culture" to rep, but we all know when someone comes from an african american background.

Except that he's regularly said he identifies himself as half Black half Samoan. He's never downplayed his heritage as a black man and i'm really not sure where the idea that he's done that comes from.

He's half African American so I see no problem with him playing Luke Cage.

Regardless of who you cast odds are it's gonna be someone who either doesn't quite look the part or isn't a capable enough actor/leading man.
