ok u nikkas need o cut the bullshyt with this revisionist history like the rock was just so far behind in popularity compared to austin. From 97- 99 Austin was white hot and his momentum . The rock was #1b, and his popularity was already skyrocketing to the level of Austin who had been the undisputed top guy for 3 years. By 1999 The rock had already reached crossover success status and the world not just wrestling following his every move. 2000 and beyond he surpassed Austin by a stretch partly due to Austin leaving and then the heel turn nobody asked for. During the early 2000's The Rock became damn near a conglomerate within a conglomerate, regardless of wins, losses, Face or Heel. He was already at that stage where if his name was attached to it, people were interested and that was solely of the strength of his comedic timing, charisma, and ability to not only act but improvise and control the crowd in a way that has never been seen before or since. Even during what should have been a low period with the Hollywood Rock persona, He truned it into one of the most memorable runs of his career while also being the shortest. Who tried his damndest to sell Goldberg as a legitmate threat while being a chicken shyt douche-heel and the crowd still loved it. He played the arrogant bully during his program with The Hurricane still loved it.
Every time he came back from hiatus his popularity grew even with the younger viewers, who even if they diddnt initially care had to take notice of the effect he had on the older members of the crowds with them going ballistic. I love Austin but over time The Rock surpassed him and made that small gap become a fukking chasm in the grand scheme. But in the wrestling world he'll still be #1a/b depending on how you wanna argue. I'd still say both became bigger than Hogan despite being in the same stratosphere.
And miss me with the 'he was only super popular with the blacks' BS because it was white investors, directors, producers, and marketers who took notice and saw his potential to be a multi million brand. There was white fans in the crowd going ballistic along with every other race of die hard fans when his entrance music hit.
