This might have some truth because the mainstream music machine wised up in the early 90's that positive Hip Hop was influencing black youth to become mad at the establishment. Like Wise Intelligent said, one of the biggest Rap records out in the years prior to the L.A. riots was "Fight the Power":
Some of the biggest Rap acts in the early 90's promoted POSITIVE music, never switched up and were supported by major labels. shyt, all of East Coast Rap prior to Black Moon
Enta The Stage was some positive intelligent shyt from Boogie Down Productions (after Criminal Minded of course), Public Enemy, Brand Nubian, Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth etc.
But at the same time, you can't be a fukking slave to the rhythm. "Rap music made me do it" is a cop out.
And I've seen nikkas from good families from 100% suburban upbringings trying to live out
Reasonable Doubt just because that's what mainstream pop culture promotes as respectable success for young black men. But anyone with a shred of common sense knows that's bullshyt. Young nikkas in the hood are selling dope and shooting at each other because Uncle Sam imports tons of dope and guns into the hood ever year, there's a liquor store on every corner, there are no jobs or real opportunities for most brothers in the hood and the government has created a generational welfare dependence system where fathers aren't needed. This is something that blacks born and raised in the 'burbs can never ever relate to, but they want to because of Hip Hop and low self-esteem.
But if you were raised in the 'burbs and come from a good family, you are a straight clown if you choose to live the street life of hustling and gun busting just because Jay-Z made it sound cool.
I know some dudes out here from nice suburban families doing decades behind the walls trying to live out Hov lyrics and it's nobody's fault but their own.
