It was ok. My old co-worker played Issa Rae’s father as an old man. Im happ for Rob’s career.

I connected more with the parents more so than the main characters

That’s dope. I think if the whole movie was Issa Rae’s father recounting the love story to Lakeith’s character it would’ve been a better movie

I enjoyed this. Like someone else said it’s really the little things like them meeting and just living. I felt like they really got those moments perfect. Like when they were in the restaurant talking about music. That’s just some regular normal shyt but I loved those moments how they were both nervous around each other.

the parents love story was cool but I hated how there felt like parts were missing from that story.

This movie wasnt that good imo. Great directing, cinematography, and music but the story fell flat imo. Michael ran smooth game on Mae. He truly didn't like her

If you think you're lonely now, ohhh girl...
I enjoyed it. I give it like a 7/10. I will say that as someone that is very critical of films that I’ve noticed we have a tendency to be hyper critical of our films, and less critical of “others.” I noticed this when Once Upon a Time in Hollywood came out and started checking myself. I digress, though.

Was it predictable? Yes. It was well made and executed, though. That scene where Mae told her pops that Christina died.... :wow:

I liked the scene from Christina’s perspective when she got out the truck with Isaac and you see she wasn’t some stoic women as she was from his perspective, but an emotional wreck.
It was dope. I recommend it.

True. But on the flip side I saw a few people on twitter trying to shame black folks into liking the movie. Talking about “the only reason you don’t like this is because you only love negative black movies with trauma and death” :stopitslime:

I hate that take. Black folks should be able to judge movies with black leads the same way we judge any other movie. It’s great to see a black love story on screen but to me it would be more insulting to be more lenient in how we judge it rather than holding it to the same standard we hold anything else.

I do agree with you though that some people go in the complete other direction with their critique of a black films, judging it more on how “positive” and “socially conscious” it is rather than whether or not it’s an actual good movie.

Just saw it really enjoyed the story it took a great bit from Live Jones imo. The Mae's mother backdrop story was interesting but it was hard for me to buy into her being a "bad"mother. My perspective is that she was a workaholic providing a great life for Mae but maybe I'm being a little sympathetic to her because if how she was treated by her mother.

The NY Times review liked the same things posters did here, Stanfield's acting, Issa Rae, the chemistry and small moments, but honed in on the uneven direction and the back and forth narrative, past and present, which I usually dislike. As soon as I start getting into the characters, they snatch you out of the moment, and into some other world, and then do it again.

Mixed on seeing this.

This was a really good film. I enjoyed everything about it really.

For those saying they didn't enjoy the ending...

I hope they make this a 3 part movie. I watched a trilogy a few back that this reminds me of...

1st movie showed the courting/dating process.

2nd movie showed the marriage/kids.

3rd movie showed the decline/divorce.

It was really well done, would be dope if they do the same.

Maybe change out the divorce for showing move of their kids story.
