brehs, in a bit of a dilemma. it's time to upgrade my CPU.

Current CPU: i7-3930K. 6-Cores @3.2 GHz.

problem is that i need to change motherboards because this current processor socket I'm having way too much of an issue finding a compatible upgrade without paying too much of a price. at this point it would just be better to switch motherboard/socket type altogether.

I know AMD and Ryzen is the new buzz out but what do you guys think? if there's anyone here that's messed with it I'll try to find the posts, I kinda don't trust alot of reviews.

Basically I'm just looking for some good motherboard reccomendations or a point in a direction.

:whoa::whoa::whoa: you're like 3 to 4 generations behind. I recommend looking at the new processors. I always go intel, but he new amd chips are looking nice. Still...I'll always go intel, unless AMD gives me 4.5ghz with 40 lanes

I'll likely stick with intel, i'll just focus my attention on a good socket type.

i've been having my eyes on this particular motherboard since current socket type is :flabbynsick:.

I clocked it slightly. I don't have the cooling to really experiment with it any further and I figured if I gotta take this processor that far I may as well get a new one altogether while I'm at it. My cards are good but on processor heavy games like WoW I'm lacking since their engine is old.

I have a Ryzen

1700

Its clocked at 3.2 atm.

I pushed it to 4.0 but it overheated on me with a H60 cooler :russ:

It's very nice :ehh:

Don't fall for the hype with 1700x and 1800x.

The regular 1700 can be clocked up to 1800x standards with less voltage used.

Just get a very good cooling system.

AMD has said that their AM4 boards will last at least four years, so if you don't want to have to upgrade every one or two generations like Intel, you may want to check out Ryzen

Main reason I'm moving back to AMD. But I did buy a good generation (Haswell) so I haven't had to buy anything new just yet. :ehh:

intel's next enthusiast grade platform, x299, is rumored to launch later this year. might as well wait for that.
this. @baqardi what do u do with your pc? if u strictly game, dont waste your time with enthusiast chipsets. if u do a lot of rendering or post production, ryzen is the clear cut winner due to its value.

Strictly game, that includes emulators like my PS2 emulator, also thought about having a stream setup

you could probably squeeze some more life out of it if you can get it up over 4Ghz. overclocking is gonna benefit older games that are mostly single threaded

I just don't find it necessary to upgrade my cpu that often. one of the reasons I upgraded last time was so I could get new mobo tech, like sata III and usb 3.0

:stopitslime:

what the hell u doing with a 3930k/x79 chipset? get yourself an i5 6600k - no sense in the newest kaby lake cpus - and pair it with a mid high end 1151 socket chipset motherboard.

if you are going to stream, than get the i7 6700k from microcenter or somewhere cheap. pair it with whatever motherboard u like in terms of features an aesthetics between $140-$200 on either z170 or z270. brand dont matter, theyre all good.

also, are u gaming on 1080p? and whats ur current gpu? i hope you still aint on hdd for your boot drive :hhh:
