I think it's the combo system. I like the story of MK. It's easily the best story in fighting games but after I play through the story don't really care about the game part. The last game I just watched it on YouTube.
Mortal Kombat is trash gameplay wise.
If you take out the gore it's a game most people all of a sudden care way less about.
The story and characters are interesting and iconic but that's about it and for a fighting game that wouldn't have gotten you far.
Mk has the highest amount of sales true, but it's basically iconic gore porn. People will always tune, pick and try whatever the newest MK is to do something gory

It's really just the stiffness and rigidity of it. It's a staple of the series but knowing that people still complain about it.
That and NRS cant balance them for shyt. They make projectile chars OP in every game they make

MK been around for three decades, the gore is why got popular initially' but theres something beneath the surface that can be attributed to its longevity. Mortal Kombat is far more FUN than any other fighting game ("deeper" mechanics =/= "fun" Video games are supposed to be fun, not overly technical). The gameplay isnt trash is at all, it just isnt traditional in some ways.
