One thing that stuck with me and I've been thinking about the entire day, and which I finally figured out why it stuck with me is the importance of the fly. And I'm not merely talking about the ending scene.

In the opening scene it's established that the hosts don't react to them as one crawls across Delores' eye.

Then there's the piece of dialogue about how a host could never hurt a human, they couldn't even hurt a fly. This obviously seems like a setup for the ending scene but there's an even more important scene about it, the one where the sheriff starts to malfunction when he's escorting the guests. Because what's important here is what happens precisely before he starts malfunctioning. A fly lands on his face.

Why is this important? Because of what is being discussed about the hosts in other scenes about the reveries allowing them to pick up small touches/details in human behavior and imitate them so they appear more lifelike, such as the hooker from the saloon rubbing her lips and the sheriff, when fixed, combing his mustache with his fingers. So to bring that back to the fly, what is the most subconscious, instinctive move a person makes when a fly lands on them? They swat it, and I think we all know that we do it without even thinking about it. So what happens when the hosts constantly register the guests doing this? They want to start imitating it, but to do so they would intent on killing the fly, and this goes directly against their core programming. And thus, unaware to the programmers, they have created a paradox in their system, one that is causing them to glitch.

This brings a lot more meaning to the end scene because it doesn't just mean that Delores' has somehow overcome the glitch, but this means that her AI is evolved far ahead of the other hosts in the park. And we already know why this is because of what is said about her towards the end, namely that she is the oldest host in the park. Which means she contains more reveries than any other host in the park, the same reveries that stand at the core of the hosts' changing behavior.

So we really already know why and how she has overcome her programming, and this leads me to theorize that she is in fact so far ahead of the other hosts that she is evolved even far beyond what the programmers think is going on, and that she has been playing along for a while now.

"
Fun fact, after 5 months of inactivity on reddit Jonathan Nolan posted a vague reply to a thread in /r/Showerthoughts: "Boy have we got a show for you!"

The title of that thread: "I'm not scared of a computer passing the turing test... I'm terrified of one that intentionally fails it."

I'd take that as 100% confirmation that what you're saying is going to happen.

It predates literally everything you've said. :mjlol:

The OG movie came out in '73.

Fred.

Imagine "Red Dead Redemption" (or any open world video game, but that one in particular because it has an old west motif) if the NPCs (characters that aren't directly controlled by you) became sentient.

That's about the easiest way to sum it up.

Fred.

Thanks for the info! I seriously didn't know anything about this show or the original movie. I was just bored and decided to pick a channel. So this is kinda exciting, although I hope it's not always so confusing because that will get old quickly. I think as a newbie to this story, it's a lot to digest at first because it's so out there, but I'm still interested.

There's no promo out for the 2nd episode. The promo is for the remaineder of the season. Lots of shyt in there that we won't see for a while.

Several critics who've seen the first four have said that is actually a slow burn with lots of world building. At least until the end of the 4th episode.

oh :deadmanny: the vid i saw was tagged "2nd episode".

well that makes more sense...cuz shyt was looking like it going from from 1-1000 next week.

Was interesting. Random thoughts but its how my brain works: Seems like a lot of work to keep that park up. You got cats shooting the joint up on the regular, dudes wildin and probably breaking stuff and all that yet the whole place gotta look brand new what every morning? Every week? Plus you gotta make sure all the bodies and all that get cleaned up.

Each guest is paying at least $40,000 a day, bread ain't a problem for the people that run it.

What do you guys think about the "black" theme that kept being brought up?

"Blakhole sun" "paint it black" Johnny Cash in the end and he was famous for being "the man in black" and of course Ed Harris character?

Nah that's the way they're supposed to act. Which is why the first ep ended with Dolores killing one.

I think he's saying an actual bug is the cause of the technical bug, which is kinda ironic.

I think Delores knows what's going on because she just told ol boy "I would never harm a living thing" then killed a fly directly afterwards. They're supposed to ignore flies.

In the ocean where the sharks be at
No way Dolores isn't aware of what is going on. Show is incredible.

Can't say fasho but I think she's evolving. When the episode first started, the fly rode her face and she didn't react. At the end she killed it.

I think something going on wit her dude too. After he'd been "killed" the second time ( he got shot in the same place:jbhmm:) while on the trolley, he felt on his chest like he possibly remembered something.
