Just came home from this, very enjoyable movie….Far from perfect, but overall, I was impressed by a fukking movie with discussions on top 5 rappers, and I liked Rock's approach to himself and the industry, the 'Funny People' comparison is right on, I feel it would have benefited a lot from being closer to 'Funny People' in overall tone.
I thought the satire got a little distracting and over the top, esp. concerning 'Uprize', and made for some uneven moments….but I really had fun, the scenes in Rock's neighborhood, in Houston, with his family, the Suge Knight joke (not perfect execution, but points anyway), the DMX cameo were all great.
Though, it is kind of sad that X is reduced to being a punchline in a hip hop movie, though I understood it beyond that. I have rap/hip hop etched across my heart, and as I walked home I missed the old middle school convos about Pac and Big, like 98-99, when I copped 'The Source' and XXL, which is what I think one of the main points of the movie was it's made by, and made for, people who love hip hop and i loved that about it.
Rosario Dawson was great, as were all the supporting roles. As a movie it's imperfect, and suffers from some overly familiar plot developments and set ups that went nowhere, as well as the previously mentioned over the top satire, some of the critiques or commentaries felt out of place? or unneeded? Kevin Hart's bit wasn't as funny as I would have liked, he can be really hit or miss on the big screen. I hope Rock makes more movies like this, this seems like one from the heart, it was at it's best when it felt like Rock was taking us through a version at least of his career and his life, and that outshines the less impressive parts. Also, the movie looked great, casting, clothes, sets….and the romance was genuine and well done, imo.
edit to say: if you has ever listed your top 5, top 3 whatever, rappers, and will still argue or discuss the subject you should love this movies, if that is unfamiliar to you, movie isn't for you.
