Finally caught this weeks episode
Writing, acting and setting aside, this show might have the best production values I've ever seen
The score is amazing
The camera work is brilliant
From the shot of Thack slowly entering Lucy's room (the lighting
) to the end of the episode blew my mind how well done it was. Those familiar with Utopia know about the praise it gets for its visuals, but The Knick is better to me because instead of depending on striking colors they get amazing results using natural lighting and inventive camera angles.
The only slight issue I have is how quickly it seems Thackery had a 180 on his treatment of Algernon. He was nearly as severe towards his as Everett was and flipped in the span of one season pretty much. I get that we're supposed to realize that he was never really that racist but merely didn't want to deal with the distraction, but I think it would have worked better if it was drawn out over a few episodes.
This show is so incredible,
