First one is a no-go. The Topps Chrome autos are nice but priced way too high. I always recommend buying graded over raw, especially now with the insane wait times.

@Codeine Bryant @Miggs do you think all 2012 Gold Prizms will be highly coveted, regardless of player, in the future? I ask because a '97 PMG Green of LaPhonso Ellis went for almost $18K last month and the sale was legit because Nat Turner said he was outbid on it.

I can't believe someone would spend that much on a LaPhonso Ellis card but that's the #1 parallel of the 90s. Are 2012 Gold Prizms of Tayshaun Prince and Marco Belinelli gonna command prices like that down the line?

I think they'll be pretty coveted for collectors who want the full set. I know 12 prizm is already SP compared to the mass production of today's hoops, donruss, and prizm. The gold only helps.

You're onto something. It's definitely the modern NBA set and year that collectors gravitate to for the current crop of stars.

So, I think I'm going to be putting ab out $500/week aside for cards. Doesn't mean I'll spend it all in one week, but with some of my side investments, I'll be able to put $500/week aside for this. I was going to do more, but I know I'm just getting started and don't want to get burned or make stupid decisions.

With that said, a few questions I don't think I asked you guys before:

1. For the NFL, I know QB's are the highest valued cards. However, what brand of cards are typically the most valuable? And, what tends to matter more, the brand of the card, the autograph on a card, or the rarity such as 1/5, 1/10, etc?

2. I am considering try to buy some young QB's cards for QB's that I believe may blossom in the future, but aren't at that level now. I'm referring to QB's such as Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones. I'm not saying I fully believe in both of them, but is it worth trying to buy them where they are now?

3. This somewhat goes hand in hand with the question above. How big of a factor is the market a player plays in? Would there be a premium for players in New York, Dallas, Chicago, etc?

4. From what I've been reading, most seem to say that PSA is better for vintage cards, but Beckett is better for newer cards? Any opinions on this?

Again, these questions are all geared specifically towards the NFL. I haven't touched anything NBA related much yet.

Edit: I was also thinking of trying to buy some Stafford, Wentz, and Goff rookie cards.:lupe:.

Also, have any of you ever done one of those Panini One boxes? The prices on those are insane. I thought the 2020 NFL ones were expensive, but then I looked at the 2019-2020 NBA ones and........:damn:.

I looked at the 2019 NFL ones in comparison the 2020, and it's almost half the price. I'm assuming that's likely due to the 2020 having QB's as a whole that may be more valuable, and a deeper offensive draft?

The one card i got from that break was a Udoka Azuibuke threads card:snoop:

I did a few breaks last night, and I got the Chargers as one of my teams in the first one. All I got was a Joshua Kelley redemption.

Of course the second break, I don't get the Chargers, and the person who did get them ended up with a Herbert auto patch.:unimpressed:.

I've been tempted to try one of these Panini One boxes, but I know I'll probably get some fourth rounder and burn $700 or whatever it costs.

1.) Brand matters most. Personally, I will never buy a sticker auto and prices are generally lower on those compared to on-card. The only exception I've seen price-wise is Contenders Football. People will suck it up on those simply because of its history and pedigree. Rarity matters but some of these sets with endless parallels it means less and only certain colors really matter: Black, Gold, Blue, team color and Silver.

2.) Yeah, like I said yesterday, it's not the worst gamble to pick up some cards of QBs who have struggled out of the gates. Josh Allen looked like shyt his first couple years and now his prices have exploded. Everything can change in a heartbeat depending on performance, good or bad.

3.) I don't think it really matters in football that much. Some guys will get a little bump from the premier destinations but it isn't like KC is a major market; New England wasn't much before Brady and certainly Tampa isn't a media darling.

4.) PSA is better for everything. The Beckett is better for modern cards is a dated belief. Send everything to PSA if you're grading. There's nothing wrong with buying BGS cards but same grades (PSA 10 = BGS 9.5) will lean heavily in PSA's favor price-wise. It's going to continue that way for a variety of reasons:

a.) PSA has a registry on their site that people love to compile and compare collections.
b.) PSA's slabs are cleaner and uniform. BGS' are bulky and they have different color labels by grading tier. That is a major turnoff.
c.) All the hype in the hobby from big wigs is about PSA cards plus they have the longer history.

Yeah, it's a Dutch auction. Panini does this for all their First Off The Line releases now.

Interesting. That seems like it may be the only way to get one of those cases without getting reamed even more than you will during the auction.

Let's say I put $6,000 aside, do you think it would be worth trying to get in on the auction? I would not buy above $2,000/box. I would be fine with getting no boxes in this situation, so maybe I would pull the trigger on three of them? I'm guessing you would still believe that would be overpriced?

In other words, I wouldn't be desperate to get boxes. I would be fine with getting zero, but may also be fine getting 3-4 boxes at $1,500-2,000.

Last couple 2019 Select FOTL boxes auctioned around $800 on eBay though they only had 5 packs instead of 12 like this year's will have. There's a bunch of BIN/BOs sitting there at $1,100-1,200 too. Personally, I would wait until at least $1,500 and probably lower.

Just basing off the recent Prizm Basketball FOTL, this has a chance to get close to the floor. I think people are starting to realize how crazy wax prices have become.

PSA just halted all submissions below the $300/card level until at least July 1st. :picard:

They weren't trying to get hit with a million Prizm base cards and be backed up for the next decade.

I think their slabs will carry an even bigger premium now at least for the time being and possibly lower the value of raw cards.
