More good then bad. I really, really was cheering for this to be a classic. I mean you got the Spike Lee camera work, music, scenery. Just brought back the old Spike Lee feeling. I don't watch Ballers so this was my first time watching Denzel son. And he proved he could carry a movie. I didn't get to know him as a person but he did his part in the role he played. I loved the fast dialogue at times which goes back to that Spike feeling. Then the "ending, ending" was thought provoking and Spike-ish. But with all that said, I still couldn't ignore certain parts that just irked me. And it goes to my expectation. I expected since it was based on a book that it was going to be extremely accurate (which it was from what I read from reviews). But the parts that it wasn't really put the film down a notch for me. Have to put this in spoilers
When Denzel ran security for David Duke why didn't he change his accent to a Black accent. His White voice (some will catch that reference) was clearly too similar to what he did on the phone. Secondly, when that Klansman went to Denzel appt, he should have instantly recognized him at the David Duke gathering. 3rd and the part that turned me off the most, was when that Klansman wife tried to plant the bomb in the mailbox and those fools blew up themselves. I knew instantly that was Hollywood and such a turn off. Instead of turning that into a police brutality moment, find a different way for him to be the hero. Not something as silly and unlikely as that. That felt like something Peele wanted in the movie. Even though that wasn't the ending to the story, it just felt like a happy ending vibe. Sorta like what Peele did in "Get Out". If you're going to Hollywoodize it, have Angela Davis Jr. get shot or hurt. Not them fools blowing themselves up

My other criticism was the propaganda was just to obvious. From the lawn signs, to the David Dude in the White house stuff. Just no subtlety. Just went out of it's way to compare the 1970
s to what 45 is doing. I get it but it's just preachy in the way he approached it. Now, the Harry Belefonte part was cool in the way he was preachy. But in other ways it was annoying. It's like the problems I have with faith based films (and I'm a Christian). You gotta do it in a artful way. But again, the good outweighs the bad and I would see it again. Even just for the simple reason of getting that Spike Lee feel. Lastly, really surprised to see a Spike Lee film without a bunch of sex scenes.
Most whites think we all look the same, I was surprised the clansman didn’t notice breh

Just got back. Saw it at the Laemmle in North Hollywood. Packed house. My guy Ken killed his role (Sergeant Trapp). A lot of what was already stated was what I experienced. The footage at the end was the quietest I've ever heard a theater. White lady behind me started crying :picard: Then after the final symbol and fade to black, Prince song started, and the theater erupted in applause :wow: Most powerful film I've seen in quite some time.

Hold on, which undercover are you talking about Driver?

Baldwin shot: It was classic Spike. That opening Alec Baldwin scene is vintage Spike. He is a master of that sh*t. Using different color schemes/palettes/textures in scenes is just ill. :whew:

Also, theater went crazy at the end of the movie when Patrice and Ron were "walking" out to see who was outside after hearing a knock at the door. Spike's signature "walking" shot.

What theater did you see it at. I was anticipating that trademark “dolly” gliding/walking shot:wow:

I didn’t think most audiences still cared :manny:

Why? I think he was Italian.

Cause he’s technically an immigrant and not
“Pure aryan blood” superior race maybe? :yeshrug:

Plus everyone else was straight up white

I think spike was making a point with this he has a history with Italians in his movies :pachaha:

I saw it kinda like that one Asian guy in Get Out:manny:

I liked this a lot and expect Spike to get an Oscar nom for it.
The only thing I didn't like was the romantic subplot between Ron and the college chick mainly because it seemed like it could have been completely left out of the movie and not caused much of a problem and she was a bit of a mediocre actress.

Spike Lee got another hit on his hands :wow:

Peele 2 for 2 as well :wow:

Denzel son is a chip off the old block :wow:

Oscar Season is gonna be lit. Wear all black :wow:

Was that white Ron under the kkk mask at the end? :lupe:

Peele really breathed life into black cinema with Get Out.
Mainstream paying attention now. Him and Lee :wow:

I aint gonna lie, since yesterday night, I had this song on repeat.

I thought the movie elevated itself during the scene where this song played. Whole scene felt like something Scorsese wouldve done.

That was one of my grandmom's favorite bands...you came to her house while she was cooking and you were guaranteed to here It's Too Late (To Turn Back Now) and Treat Her Like A Lady blasting from her old stereo.

Just got back and I experienced the same thing, I was one of the few black faces at the showing. It was all fun until we got to end, that scene was extra impactful considering that the fukker who drove the vehicle into the crowd is from the same city in Ohio where I was watching the movie.
My theater was all black.
After seeing The Help and Selma in theaters that were majority white audiences and not liking the vibe I try to check out any new black movies at theaters where I know the white people don't tend to go to in large numbers.
