I've been wacthing youtube vids on film making over the past few weeks now doing research. I've narrowed my choices down between the GH5 and the Sony alpha 7iii. The 7iiiS has no release date, but im looking to purchase over the next few weeks honestly.

And @Kamikaze Revy why do you like to shoot in 4K 60fps? I thought most movies were shot in 24-30 fps? Im mainly going to be shooting documentaries, some music videos, and some occasional survey work.

Also, are there any good youtube channels you recommend? I''ve found some really good ones like D4Darious, but need a few more.

I'll be picking your brain on all the other accessories in the future. As far as cages and gimbals, i have some good ones i've seen. The DJI Gimbal unit looks like the one i'll end up going with.

Thanks alot for the good info bro!
Why 4K 60fps? - Because of my workflow. I use Final Cut Pro x and work on a 24fps timeline. When I import for 60fps footage I have plenty of wiggle room to speed up or slow down footage as necessary while keeping everything looking silky smooth.

As far as YouTube I like this guys content a lot

YCImaging

Also, Parker Walbeck has some decent tips and reviews on gear. Honestly I just do random searches and pull tips from different people.

If you need some good plug ins for the low for post production check out themeforest.com
They have a bunch of β€œcall outs” that you can use to give your videos some great finishing touches.

If you want to implement slow motion you record it in 60fps and then slow it down in post to match your 24fps footage.

One thing you want to know going into filmmaking and video is how framerates work, this is a great video that breaks everything down.

So dope. Im getting into filmaking myself. Going to shoot a few documentaries and eventually films. I'm looking to upgrade my Sony Alpha 6000 to either the GH5 or the Sony alpha 7 III. What made you go with the panny?

Does the m43 formfactor not make you worry about limited depth of field options?

What type of vids are you making btw?

Cosign what @Kamikaze Revy said, M43 is a great option for budget filmmaking and is perfect for run and gun style shooting. I made the switch to M43 at the end of 2017 by getting a GH4 and have been very happy with the results. I'm about to upgrade to a new M43 body but far more important than the body is the glass you use and your understanding of how to light a scene.

Sony Alpha A7000: everything we know so far | TechRadar

I'm curious to see what they do with this here price wise.

And I'm also curious to see if they add 4K/60p and start using the newer batteries

If they add both and price this around 1500 this will be a crazy value. They'll have to pull something back, because the A7III is 2 racks and the main thing it's missing is the 4K/60fps

My guess would be they impress battery life but hold the 4K/60fps for one of their full frame cameras

As far as light performance goes; once you get a speedbooster a lot of those concerns are mitigated if not completely removed.
Auto focus is a different conversation though.
We could go on and on about whether or not you should be manual focusing and just "get good".
For quick, on your feet, run and gun style shooting (which is a lot of what I do) auto focus is very important.
Unfortunately, the GH5 struggles quite a bit in that regard in low light situations.
I originally wanted to go with the Sony A7Riii but went with the GH5 because I knew I wanted to build that camera out and the Gh5 was the more affordable option that would allow me to get the cage, gimbal, monitor, and additional lenses which to me is more important than just the camera body.
I've been really wanting a Canon 1DX for still photo's based on the recommendation of a few local photography friends.
Part of me feels like I'd be perfectly suited with a 7D MKii though. I don't know. We'll see. If business continues going as well as it has I may just go with the 1DX for the hell of it and keep it moving. I was really close to getting the Red Raven kit from Apple a few months ago and I'm glad I didn't. The money I saved, I invested in the recording studio instead.

Anybody reference a prime lens they think i should purchase for my a6500. I already have a 50mm 1.8 and i love how crisp it is, but im looking for something sharper and not so close up like the 50 is. Im also about to invest in the weebill lab by zhiyun crane, the ability to take off the arm and use it for low angles is a deal breaker for me.

Try the 35mm 1.8.

That was my go-to lens when my A6000 was my main camera. It'll give you decent versatility and is dope for video.

Went with the GH5 for 4K 60fps at that $2K price point.
Depth of field isn't an issue, low light performance can be but honestly, it's not as bad as some people on the net would have you believe.
With some native prime lenses I found the low light performance to be solid in 95% of situations.
About a month or so I put down about $10k in more equipment to keep the businesses moving forward. Picked up a metabones speed booster that allows me to use canon lenses on the GH5 as well as improves the amount of light I'm getting into the small sensor. Copped a cage with a top handle and side handle. A ninja inferno monitor which gives me the ability to film 10 bit 4K 60fps in ProRes. A sigma 18-35mm art lens and I have a 50-100mm sigma art lens on the way. Copped some new gear for the studio as well (UA Apollo X6, Adams Ax7's and Avantone MixCubes)
I launched my LLC in 2018 and had an amazing first year.
We've already done 10 (training) videos for the Navy, a few realty walk throughs, videos for local businesses, and a few government contractors.
I'm still working my 9-5 but the plan is to limit my hours to part time by the end of 2019 and put my primary focus on my business. I'd love to be doing this 100% full time by next year but I'm patient. If it takes longer I'm cool with that.
Here are some links to some of our videos that we've been allowed to make public.

What's your workflow/settings for exporting your videos?

The image quality on these joints are :whoo:...

The A7iii doesn't shoot RAW video with 10 bit, but I feel like my videos are being compressed way too much when I output them, and kind of mugging up the overall image quality. Is everything shot in 4K? I was watching a few videos in the last few days, and dudes were saying even for their 1080p footage they export it in 4K for web posting to have more leeway when it comes to compression.

Thanks breh.
Yeah I shoot everything in 4K 60fps (Unless I'm going for the super slow mo effect like I did with the mustang peeling out, then I shoot at 1080p 120fps).
I export everything in 4K for youtube and 1080p for instagram and facebook.
Compression is always going to be an issue online, but when you export it, it should definitely look crystal clear on your computer...if not...something is wrong.
I use Final Cut Pro X and usually export in H.264 codec.
Is it possible that you're exporting in MP4?
If the image you're capturing is in focus and looks great when editing, but gets downgraded in the export then I'd say something is wrong in your export settings.
