What is a Beauty Dish?

Came across these great links yesterday that explained things clearer to me.

Those of you who do portrait photography, do you use all three? Like the softbox, octobox and beauty dish?

What is better used inside and what is better used outside? Is it octobox for inside and softbox for outside?

:noah: lord Jesus this photographer is well known and one of the biggest out there for girls. I wanna get like this :whew: , gonna keep studying every day. It was @GoldenGlove who posted about his 365 plan where he made sure to learn something each day.

Quality wise this guy's style is similar to @shutterguy so the sky is the limit for any of us

they just disperse the light in different ways. you can use them interchangeably. But the difference can be subtle.

Glad I found this thread.

I got about 500 dollars of photography equipment( stands, D70 Nikon, strobe) and plan on making food photography as a side hustle.

Still trying to get down shooting in manual.

I legit wanna know how these nikkas are making bread shooting these half nekkid broads. Like are they shooting for magazines, do strippers need photos constantly like blogger hoes, so are the strippers paying the nikka. are there old white men buying prints of these hoes putting them up in they're basements? :russ:

This one breh charges 600 a shoot, delivering 3 edited photos... are these hoes realy out here paying that? i'm intrigued

Thanks for the mention, I appreciate it.

Yea, definitely use all 3. A softbox and octabox essentially do the same, just different shapes and diameters. It will come down to how much light you need to use or how large of a subject you are trying to cover. A beauty is a light modifier shaped like a dish or pan, it can be perfect for capturing close up portraits where you want to highlight skin detail or make up work. They also work as stand alone light boxes and can create a shadow directly around your subject depending on how close they are and the backdrop used. If you want to really get creative with them you can use a grid to direct the light spill and focus it on one point.

All 3 can be used inside or outdoors, they don't have a dedication location use. A photographer friend of mine used to take her strobes outside at night and use a battery pack to power them, the shots you can get are amazing if lit correctly especially when everything else is dark.

J Alex has been in the game for awhile now, one of the top shooters in the model game. Made quite a few popular.

Yes to the bolded. Quite a few photographers are working the scene and getting paid by models, Facet, J Alex and Jose Guerra, all photographers who get paid by models for promo shots or magazine work. Guerra is in NY and shoots quite a bit of models that are in and out of the bartender and stripper scene. The clubs use the shots to advertise that the model will be at the club either for hosting or bartending. For example:

That was shot by a photographer and is used by the model AND club to advertise.

If you have clientele base that showcases your work and can give referral business, yes you can make money from it. Sometimes location plays a huge part in it.

Referrals are one of the things that keeps things going, plus with IG most of these girls have a large following so if they like your work and tag you, everyone sees it, including new girls who need photos.

Also one of the reason they shoot strippers and bartenders is those women are the one with the most expendable income. They can pay for shoot and make that money back within the week from advertising their work place.

Some are, some aren't. A lot of them are doing the "startender" hustle which is what caused the NY Stripper Strike, they would dress up like strippers and bartend at the bar in front of the main stage and cats would come in and shower money at them for shaking their asses. Bartenders making stripper money without taking their clothes off. Plus some of the clubs would only hire mixed "exotic" looking women thinking they bring in more paying customers. Cats woudn't even go near the main stage, their fav girl was bartending. All kinds of fukkery going on, and that's NY. Check the link below:

- The Washington Post

IG has fueled it with so many "local celebrities" advertising their "appearance schedules" and private snapchats and pay content. The "get paid for shoots" market has definitely gotten a hell of a lot smaller, with so many people doing free shoots and everyone that has a decent cellphone taking their own pics.

girls love being in a "studio" and feeling like their doing something glamorous. And once some photogs get their name up they start charging. But yeah, at least around here, they love thinking they the shyt under them studio lights. Some models i know post more BTS of their studio shoots than the actual pictures. They pay money just for that.

You'll probably want a decent macro lens for that gig
Thanks. I’ve been YouTubing a lot but everyone has their own way.

Are fixed lenses better for sharper image than adjustable?

Gettting the right lenses is going to be next. I’m slowly building up stuff to shoot and my brother is a chef so I can get a portfolio together.
