I think the worse thing was he was the "safe" choice compared to some of the cast of characters who ran against him in the Primary. The party knew that this was not the year to be running against him and I think 2016 you'll see more excitement. That year you'll probably see Chris Christie, Paul Ryan, and Marco Rubio run for President.

I'd throw Gary Johnson in with Huntsman as well. Both weren't batshyt crazy, believed in common sense, and had similar/better terms as Governor. Unforutnately because of Huntsman's ties to Obama, the party wasn't going to back him. Johnson unfortunately didn't have the name/star power to get the backing.
