you connect it to a monitor, is this for your server or your htpc? servers dont use windows OS , they use different NAS operating systems

check out the link i posted a post or two ago and this one

Turn an Old Computer into a Networked Backup, Streaming, or Torrenting Machine with FreeNAS

I don't have a CD/DVD drive and I installed Windows 8 on my custom built PC with a USB flash drive.

It's easy, there's some videos on Youtube that show you how to make the flash drive boot/install an OS as well.

If the server is going to be hidden I'd get the cheapest case with the most 3.5 bays. Was thinking on getting that case some time ago for my previous HTPC before I decided I wanted a mini-itx compact build.

its for the server

what about ram tho? do i need it for the server

edit: i can download torrents straight to the server? :wow2:

can believe i been sleeping on this for so long

Yeah, I run uTorrent on my server. I have it set so when I drop a *.torrent file in "auto torrents" it does its thing on its own. I use the webui to control it from all my other devices.

servers really dont need a lot of ram 2 gigs is fine

yea its really amazing what you can do with them , am opting to go the lazy route and just buy a smaller nas , its a bit more expensive , but synology is top notch with there shyt

[ame=http://www.amazon.com/Synology-Feature-Rich-Attached-Workgroup-DS213/dp/B008U68UHG]Amazon.com: Synology Feature-Rich 2-Bay Network Attached Storage Server for Workgroup/Office (DS213): Computers & Accessories[/ame]

this thing can run

plex
has its own media server
allows you to host your cloud storage/website/server
set up a surveillance station
auto record live tv with a tv tuner
auto download of torrent (with build virus checker)

etc etc , all things you can on your own nas , just that it comes set up already in these

Wrong on so many levels breh. A server can use whatever OS you want to throw on it. A NAS os would be my last option since it limits what you can do with the machine.

:ohhh: dam my bad , thats the impression i was getting from reading around, that you really dont need a full OS on it especially for him since he is going to have a separate nas and htpc

While Nas OS's can be used on just about anything they are really meant for older machines you may want to repurpose No reason to be buying top of the line shyt for it. Another reason people love it is cause its free. If the HTPC he is getting and main PC were not windows based I'd say go for it. But sharing via SAMBA to Windows from linux based OS's is :scusthov:

You get better local network speeds via windows to windows. I'd use Windows Home Server 2011 or any other Win OS he can get his hands on.

Off topic, Mico Center done lost their minds with these coupons, :russ:

You could hide it in another room and run some Ethernet cable between the NAS and the router.

If that's not suitable for you maybe 500mbps homeplugs might suit you better. Then you can put NAS anywhere in your house.

Hardwire with Ethernet cables where possible. Don't wanna invest in gigabit Ethernet capable devices and then not use it.

explain the bolded
These are homeplugs..

http://p.playserver1.com/ProductImages/8/0/1/3/5/8/8/1/18853108_300x300_1.jpg

They use power outlets/sockets to form/extend your network. For example, if you didn't have wifi or want to use it, you would plug one homeplug into a power socket and connect it to your router with a short ethernet cable (supplied usually). You'd then take the second homeplug and do the same near the device you wish to give network access to (PS3, HTPC, NAS, 360, etc) and connect that device to the second homeplug with another short ethernet cable. Ta-daaaaaa, nucca, network happiness.

"Hardwire with ethernet" means ethernet cables over wifi where possible because it gives faster speeds and the connect is consistent (people suffer with black spots in their homes with wifi etc). Gigabit ethernet refers to the speed your devices can exchange and transfer data on your network. Gigabit is faster than 10/100 connections that most people probably use. HD/BluRay files can be big. You should be fine for the most part at the moment but later down the line Gigabit ports/connections will be more important.

Gigabit ports connected to a 10/100 port/device will only transfer info at the 10/100 speed. This will create a bottleneck. This is what I said you wouldn't want after investing a Gigabit capable devices. Homeplugs, while easy to use and definitely serve their purpose, aren't the most adequate way of achieving maximum network speed. Personally at the moment I have 2 HTPCs running off 200mbps homeplugs, despite my router and nas being gigabit. This is because it works fine for my intended purpose, and because I'm a lazy motherfukker who doesn't practice what he preaches and am yet to run the ethernet cables. :manny:

etc. etc.
