I saw The Devil's Backbone yesterday. I liked it. I thought it wasn't as good as Pan's Labyrinth, but liked it a lot more than Cronos. Pretty easy to see why del Toro says TDB and PL are his 2 favorite movies.

Tokyo Drifter from 1966

Really enjoyed this. From the western themes, to the colors, the editing, the music, the cinematography, so on and so forth. It wears its influences on its sleeve and you can clearly see what other films it has influenced *cough* Kill Bill *cough*

And I think that it is a good introduction into Seijun Suzuki for me. I tried to watch Branded to Kill a little while back and just didn't get it, but I'm gonna go back and watch it after reading his wiki page and watching Drifter.

I just finished watching M. DVR'd it on TCM a couple of days ago. It's crazy that it was made 83 years ago. It felt really ahead of its time so I'm not surprised it's considered to be a classic.

Also recorded The Third Man on TCM earlier today which I've heard is a classic too.

Yeah I saw this last summer and agree that it likely influenced Tarantino. I enjoyed this movie too.

I would recommend watching El Orfanatos (the orphanage ) next.. don't think it's criterion but del toro produced it and it has similairities to devil's backbone

not very scary more of a thriller, though i like the way the story ties together

i really wonder if dude is an orphan himself..4 of his films he either directed or produced are about oprhans

There are a few that are better (Pickpocket, Last Year at Marienbad, Rules of the Game, La Jetee) but it's definitely up there. The big music scene always gets me. You should see the film Varda did afterward, La Bonheur. Amazing colors, seems like something that would influence Boards of Canada.

Hidden Fortress
City Lights
Pale Flower
The Great Dictator
Diabolique

.....but if it's anything like that last couple of B&N sales, I'll end up with about twice that :yeshrug:
