I watched a mini-series called the Good Lord Bird on Showtime. It's about John Brown the abolitionist behind the raid at Harper's Ferry. It's not horror, it's more drama with comedy intertwined but I was surprised to see it's a Blumhouse production...good one too.
I started watching that Good Lord Bird movie (edit - series) too. Ethan Hawke and Blumhouse have been a good combination ever since Sinister. I thought it was going to be another overblown “white savior” type deal like they did with Matthew McConaghey (sp) in Free State of Jones. but it’s not like that. The only part that confused me is why they were passing the little boy off. ( I won’t go into details bc spoiler), but I’m only on the second half of episode 2 so I’ll see how it goes. The comedy is also not that corny slapstick sidekick routine that studios usually resort to for purposes of lightening up the subject matter. It’s gritty and graphic enough to tells what slaves had to endure and how evil the owners could be; rather than for purposes of making feel comfortable. In that sense, I could see the horror elements which Blum knows how to mesh that in. BH is killing the game Rn

Show is mad slept on.
Aside from Onion frontin like a chick shyt was off the hook!
Ethan def gonna rack up some awards for that shyt.
It seems like they’re trying to give Good Lord Bird the “birth of a nation” Nate Parker treatment by not promoting it or mainstreaming it bc the series depicts how brutal slavery was and the violent ways that slaves had to fight back to be free- this is not your regular submissive slave type of series. Because what history fails to address is that Black people fought back Most of the time - most slaves did fight for their lives with their lives and confronted the white regime. You know how most slave movies are “yessuh, no sir, I been good and listen to massa”
b.s. which wasn’t the case. There’s many historical documents that show slave uprisings and revolts took place on a regular basis. That’s the reason why shows like “Underground” didn’t get much press and only had one season. Correct me if I’m wrong @storyteller bc I’ve only seen the one complete episode.

I definitely think there's GOT to be an element of suits and marketing not wanting to be "controversial" by being honest about the real complexities and ugliness that was going on back then. Everyone is flawed and real. I honestly don't know how this ish isn't bigger otherwise. At the absolute minimum the performance by Ethan Hawke in this series should be getting the type of hope that great television performances have gotten in recent history (I'm talking mcconaughey in True Detective type hype).

I think the fact that they wipe off any veneer of sanctity everybody (one exception and it's for damned good reason) is what makes the series really good and also why they may have been afraid to promote it. I have a lot of thoughts about the series but I also would hate to spoil anything because there's so much going on.

I will say that the whole onion in a dress thing at least has some symbolic value. Nice subtle nod to the ego and white savior complex that even the best intentioned abolitionists could be victims of and I think that's a parallel to some of what we see today. But lemme not get OD political in a horror thread.

I’m going to watch this. Saw the trailer, looks promising.
I think you might like it - it’s a lot to take in. Be warned - it’s very graphic. Like @storyteller said - it’s one of those movies that’s a watch and it sticks with you for awhile; not for the casual horror movie viewer. It was intriguing imo and it has the type of “scare factor” that I haven’t seen awhile.

Watching this Deborah Logan ish now.

If Sarah isnt the most boyish looking woman ever in movie history...

:picard:

Edit

This was cool.
one thing that ALWAYS annoys me with the found footage joints is when they do that "theres nothing here."
"What are we doing?"
"I donnt see nothing."

And then...

BOOM!

"Oh my god!"
"This is crazy!"
"Whats happening?"

:beli:

The daughter was kinda distracting cause she reminded me of Woody from "Toy Story."
It was ok tho. Especially towards the end.
Thought it was funny how old boy skated on their asses with the van.

Yeah I enjoyed the movie. I also liked that it wasn't a demon, but the soul of an evil man.
